I have a 163 x 2.6 and buddy has 163 x 3 and only time I felt he could go farther is on a steep climb. Not because mine would not go straight up but because there were obstacles in my path and I had to slow down too much and could not recover ground speed like he could. In all other conditions I prefered the 2.6.

You bought a sled with the shortest recommended track for the mountains and the shortest lugs available for a mountain sled. How well did you think it was gonna go in the deep?
This sounds mean but I dont mean it to be.

Amazing that anyone got anywhere with less than a 175 3" a few years ago

Anyhow, I have a 163 3" and after having a 163 2.6, a 163 2.5, a 154 2.5, 154 2.25, and a 146 2.25, there was a 151 in there somewhere as well, I want to go back to a 155 2.6 lol

I got a 18 axys 155 at the end of last year.

Had it on the deck next to a 156 xm and the axys had way more track touching the deck.

Approach angles were identical, and first lug was touching the deck in at the same spot at the front. The axys was longer in the back by almost the whole idler wheel.

So 15" wide v.s. 16" wide is not the only argument anymore. Now we need to look at how much track length is in the air v.s. on the snow. It will be interesting to have the 174 AXYS next to the 175 G4 this winter to see if the AXYS has more length on the snow.

And that measurement will not be the same if you aren’t riding on hard pack since the track is going to be down in the snow.

Who cares that the XM is shorter? they haven't been made in years... the G4 165 was almost as long as the 174XM

Anyone ride a 3" 155? I've talked to a few people that said its almost too much bite, and you cant keep enough of it on the ground to keep momentum. I think it sounds like a riot, but is it actually unrideable? I have the 2.4 right now, and found a good deal on a 3" track to throw on. If not now, I am considering ordering my next Pro with the 3" and then doing a Specialty belt drive conversion.

The Polaris 3 inch track isn't very good. If your looking at an Axys, look at the 2.6 belt drive version. You can get $800 for the 2.6 track easy and then buy the Samso 156 3.2 track. You will need drivers, but overall you will be ahead as you pay a premium for the polaris 3" sleds. After that... good clutched and a pipe and you ready to catwalk everywhere... lol.

I know if i was gonna spend the money for a new track setup, I wouldn't spend that much for the middle of the road lug height, 3.2 would be where I'd be at. I don't see any downside to the extra .2 of an inch?

I personally don't see a reason not to put a 3" or 3.2" track on a 155" Axys. You will need to do some suspension tuning and probably a KISS coupler to keep the front end down when climbing however. I rode an Axys with a 155 3" polaris track and it was a blast, everytime you were on the throttle the skis were in the air.

I swapped out the stock 2.4" 163 on my 13 Turbo Pro for a 162 3.2" and it made a huge difference. The 3 lug design seems so much more effective than the polaris 4 lug design. But I also have issues keeping the front end down now on the stock skid, something that I will have to iron out this fall.

I felt strongly that I wasn’t happy with Polaris’s 3”, enough to sell my Axys 163 3” and will go back to a 155 2.6.

Most likely because the polaris 800 engine struggles to build sufficient track speed in deep snow with the resistance and weight of a 163 x 3". I found my 155 x 3 inch (15 pro with clutching upgrades a gear down kit) would out perform my brothers 162 x 3" (similar clutching upgrades but kurts "turbo" gear down kit). I would get a couple MPH better track speed and overall more fun to ride. Part of the reason I bought a cat instead of axys this summer as I wanted a 162-3 and power to turn it. Just my .02 but the polaris engine needs some power upgrades to run a longer 3" track successfully

Full exhaust set, clutch set up, and geared down with a belt drive, the Polaris had no problem turning the 3". Straight up climbs sure it would out do the same sled with a 2.6 as proven, but for most of the year a 2.6 is just fine. I am fine giving up track speed with a 3" as well since I found my ground speed to be higher which was more important.

This year back to a short track, next year, who knows lol Maybe that new 14" wide 180 3.4" that weighs 38 pounds

In a good way though? Catwalking every where is fun and all, but if you can't climb a hill that might be an issue lol

The competition between manufacturers is a key element in the improvement of sled but its funny to see how much of a pissing contest its become the last few years lol

Introducing the 2019 models: BOLD new graphics and industry first 176" track !

I don’t know if it is a pissing match as much as it is giving the consumers what they want.

Everyone was long tracking short tracks so longer tracks came. People were strapping cleats and bars to short lug tracks and we got taller lugs. 2”, 2.25”, 2.5” and 144 to 154 to now 174 and so on. Will a manufacturer make a 3.2 or taller available? No idea.

And the 174 to 175 was due to the pitch change from 2.86 to 3.0. Sure if someone made a 3.14 pitch you might see a 176 so again not really a pissing match.

The industry giving people what they want and in turn people complain about what they have is quite humorous (as is Tapatalk auto correct) Imagine people who in the last several years have spent thousands on aftermarket over bores to get that extra 50cc and now it’s built into the cost of the sled at a fraction of the aftermarkets price.

They don’t get it correct all the time but it doesn’t stop people from buying it either.
