Peace Valley Snow Riders - Announcement
Christmas Comes Early for Peace River Area Snowmobile Club
The Peace Valley Snow Riders, which was formed in late 2009, has received an early Christmas
gift from Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) in the form of approval for their first
formal trail in the area. Work on identifying the potential route and consulting stakeholders for
the Leddy Lake Trail has spanned the last year and involved many club members and
volunteers. The 24 miles of trail, which is in the County of Northern Lights, will be 10 to 15 feet
wide and run north from the Leddy Lake Recreation Area, operated by the Weberville
Community Club, to Driftwood Lake (also known as Reese’s Lake) in the Deadwood area. The
trail is currently in an undeveloped state although the Club plans to upgrade the trail to a semideveloped
state. Development includes clearing the route with a mulcher, when funds become
available, as well as signage and occasional grooming in the future.
As the local Club is a member of the Alberta Snowmobile Association (ASA), there is a significant
emphasis on safety and responsibility in the sport. The development of trails, as shown in other
provinces, encourages responsibility as snowmobilers will know where they are allowed to
travel. Hence the vision of the Club is to create a network of trails which in the future may tie
into the trails of other Clubs in the area, such as the LaCrete Polar Cats. Currently two other
trails have been identified on the east side of the Peace River. These trails look to share a
portion of the footprint created by existing right of ways, therefore discussions with ATCO
Electric are on-going. Preliminary work has also started on other trails on the west side of the
Peace River which would link to the approved Leddy Lake Trail.
The Club welcomes volunteers to assist in trail development and in particular encourages those
with snowmobiles to join the Club. The cost of membership is currently $80 annually (cost
increases after January 1) which includes $60 for an ASA Trail Pass and $20 for membership in
the local club. The ASA Trail Pass, which is recognized on any ASA trail in the province, supports
liability coverage for trails along with development and maintenance costs. Membership can
be purchased at Maximum Powersports, Thomas Homes & RV Centre and Ace Machining &
Welding. Those wishing to volunteer or to have a tour of the trail can contact Tim Lagace –
President at 780-618-7864 or Dwayne Buchholtz – Trail Identification Committee Chair at 780-
618-1504.

Flew over our planned trail in a chopper yesterday with Dwayne and a local contractor who has graciously donated a week of mulching services to get our first trail up and running. I will provide free trucking for the transport of the mulcher to access points along our route, the money we received from the ASA will go toward fuel for the mulcher and any other work required by the unit after our week of free service is up. Mulching will begin shortly after the new year.

I am very excited that we have people stepping up to ensure our club has it's first trail before the end of the season, thank you to Tim Lagace and Dwayne Buchholtz, as well as Richard Lorentz for all their time and dedication to our cause. As well, a huge thank you goes out to Rick Serhan for the mulching donation, and to Highland Helicopters for the flights over our trail to let us and the volunteers know what we are up against and how to overcome the obstacles presented. Without the support of the ASA, none of this would be possible. Please purchase your trail passes and support the ASA, our gratitude to them cannot be expressed enough for their support.

Here are a few pictures from the helicopter ride yesterday.....

Thanks Sledderglen for the signs. We signed from Leddy Lake (staging point) all the way up the other side of the Whitemud creek. That sure makes a long day of trying to figure out where is the best area to put up signs, and clearing bush so they can see the signs.

Good on all of you....:specool::specool: May not be all that far in the future that these trails are the only place we're allowed to ride

can u ride these trails in the summer or are they really wet areas

Hey, we don't ever actually plan to contribute to your or help develop or maintain your trail system; but since you've gone to the trouble to map out, clear and sign these new trails, can we come and rip them up during the summer months so that you can spend even more time and money getting them in shape for winter?

Sorry Mavrick, but our trails are in very wet lands and the one reason why SRD accepted the trail was because of the low foot print of snowmobiles. We are hoping nobody goes on the trails in the summer just for the fact that it costs money to fix them etc. Our Mulching bill alone for this trail was over $20 000. We have had very good support from ASA as well as Lorette ttrucking in Grimshaw and Rick Serhan from Peace River. Rick alone donated $10 000 for mulching. Hope you understand.
