i'm looking for a good reliable splitter probably around the 22 ton range. i checked out the swisher at canadian tire, and they also have a champion there as well. also a friend of mine said there was a troy bilt from lowes. whats everyones thoughts on what brand would be the best. i also wouldn't mind having the option of being able to flip it up to split wood vertically, but not all brands have that option. thanks

I know this sounds wimpy but try an electric one, we got one and I would never go back to a gas powered machine. Have used lots of them. Had a bunch of people laugh at me until they tried it. Works like a charm. About $250 at peavey mart.

Crappy tire is where I bought my electric one 5 years ago and no issues so far. I split about 3-4 cords per season

Sure is nice not having that engine screaming at you with the electric unit. I also do 3-4 cords a year. Some Birch and tamarack which is hard as a rock

Been watching kijiji all summer and jack all any decent so going shopping next week for a new one too. I have a few hundred cord to split up and the but ends are 30-40" diameter. is there much difference between a 22 ton 27 ton in performance? Thought going 25 or 27 could maybe handle 4 way split head. Also like the idea of the DR but scared of the maintenance and breakdown by the looks of the system. What a good price for a 25ton

well for that much wood i'd try the rapid fire. they're super quick, seen them at the john deere dealer in fort sask. but they're not cheap i think somewhere around 2800. but i only have 3 or 4 cord to split, so i'll definetely look at some electric splitters as well, thanks for the replies.

My buddy has a 25ton Swisher one that can split logs in half sideways so I'd say 25ton is plenty

Ya it wont all be split in a few weekends but agree the DR's look quick, don't matter if broken down all the time. Hydraulic is pretty fool proof and indestructible. Will have to call around and see who all deals in splitters

hey if it works it's not whimpy... so that's a 5 ton? Does it split green birch with knots in it? for 250 it would be worth the try

My dad bought one at the farm show in gp a couple years ago. It's an all in one for splitting logs. Has a winch on it to drag the tree up the shoot to where you cut the log to what ever size length then it falls into the splitter hit the lever and as it splits your cutting the next one to be split. No bending except to hook the next log up. It's amazing how much wood you can cut with a few people in a couple hrs. It's called wallinstien 830 wood processor.

Went with a crappy tire champion on sale. 20ton and have a about 5 hrs use on it and very happy with it so far for the price. First tree was a green spruce with an average diameter of 32-36". Bad knots and all and noissues. Has the log holders on the side as an extra not a option.

I got the Champion one from Canadian tire when it was on sale, it does also flip up to split vertically.... so far works well.

So I'm in the market now, for myself and this was the best thread I found.

How are the electrics holding up, after 2 years? I have asked around and so far it's been Canadian Tire, for the 1st pick and PA for the 2nd.
I'm getting 2-5 truck loads dropped off per week in my yard and I need to buck it up faster than my arms and the maul can do.
