Do it! I am biased tho: I started with a Rebel that took film, moved up to a digital Rebel when my 3rd was born, and soon moved on to the big pro cameras that I use now. IMO, this is an Awesome entry level DSLR for newbies to the game. Good price and quality images, especially for those new baby photos. You won't find the video feature as handy as you would like, as the focussing is a bit clumsy, (especially with moving subjects) but all the still cameras that offer video have a similar problem.
Couple recommendations:
Please use the viewfinder versus the LCD live view if you can force yourself. Holding a camera 2 feet away from yourself is not the best way to have complete control over your shot. This becomes very important in low light or low shutter speed shots (ie; indoors).
Learn how to focus manually by changing your focus point. I will show you how via video if I have to. Auto focus just can't do the job that you can...
When you start looking at accessory lenses (and you will) I highly recommend the 75-300mm 4.5-5.6 USM, preferrably with image stabilization. Awesome lens!
