Background
North Queest Mountain is within the historical use area of the Queest riding area managed by the Eagle Pass Snowmobile Club. K3 Cat Skiing, Eagle Pass Heliski, and Carl Kuster Mountain Park have commercial recreation tenures adjacent to the Gorge. Louisiana-Pacific and Canoe Forest Products use the Gorge FSR and conduct timber harvesting operations in the area.
The Gorge, 8m to 18km of the Gorge FSR on the northeast side of North Queest Mountain, has been known as a ski touring destination since the early 1990’s. The Gorge was identified in the 1999 Recreation Management Plan, the 2001 Land Resource Management Plan (LRMP), and the as a ski touring destination. Recreation Sites and Trails B.C. (RSTBC) proposed a recreation site encompassing this area in 2017 and the Shuswap Trail Alliance has continued efforts to create a management plan for the area through the Shuswap Trails Roundtable.
The Gorge is with in the South Queest Caribou Management Agreement area managed by the Eagle Pass Snowmobile Club. A Wildlife Act MVPR closure is in place on portions of the Queest area. The Gorge Creek Area lies within the home range of the Frisby-Boulder-Queest Caribou herd. The Eagle Pass Snowmobile Club has an agreement with Ministry of Environment to manage the Non-Motorized Caribou Closure which crosses the Gorge FSR from approximately 16km to 18 km and encompasses the area known as Happy Valley. Access along the Gorge FSR via snowmobile is restricted due to this closure.
The Gorge Working Group includes representatives from the Eagle Pass Snowmobile Club and Revelstoke Snowmobile Club, K3 Cat Skiing, Eagle Pass Heliski and Carl Kuster Mountain Park, Recreation sites and Trails B.C. and the Shuswap Trail Alliance. This Survey is intended to gather information from users who primarily back country ski in the area, in order to provide information from this user group in order to help guide future management of the area.
