Highly recommend newbies ask for a lesson from someone experienced on the basics eg sidehilling, turning out at top of a climb, etc. Then find a mellow safe slope and practice, practice and practice some more!

Are we talking about someone thinking about it or has already bought a machine? I've known some guys who it seemed like mountain sledding would be right up there alley but they didn't like it. Wrong first ride or crew I don't know. It's a huge investment of money and probably time.

Start easy or with good support.

Don't panic and clench your right thumb causing a 'stuck throttle' incident.

Prepare yourself for the unexpected. Meaning: possess winter survival skills, know 1st aid, dress appropriately, and ride with others that not only know how to ride, but have patience and are willing to teach you in a controlled area. Stay out of the weed bag and avoid alcohol. Know how to use a compass - GPS doesn’t always work.. pack as if you are planning to spend a night (or two) on the mountain. Have mechanical skills and be able to make small repairs on the hill - seen lots of guys without spare plugs, belt, and even tool kits out there. Most importantly, don’t ride over your head. Nothing wrong with pushing yourself, but realize that the WFO approach will most likely result in bodily harm, a busted sled, or both. And wear your tether.

never ride alone and if going to the mountains and riding in new areas go with at least 4 people and keep in eye sight of each other or radio contact its a real scare if your stuck in the trees and no one can find you

It’s extra sucky when they ride right by the hole you are in without hearing you yell at them. 2 hours is an eternity when you are digging alone. RADIOS! and make sure everyone actually has them on the same channel.
