Here's a pic we took of the horses back on Nov 11. Only seen the 2 of them then, so if there was 3 it died earlier. Glad to see there is finally an effort to get them out, not surprised to hear a lawyer was involved in this, out for himself and that's it, that's why they are the scum of the earth. I hope when all is said and done someone takes the owner and this lawyer to court for their stupidity. Kudos to all involved in this effort.

Got word from Yellowhead Helicopters in Valemount who have got multiple calls today from other concerned locals regarding the removal of the horses. I see that Sara has recently posted some other info about costs/spca and so don't want to step on toes. There are obviously a few of us working on some solutions and there are some great guys working up there right now who I think would also like to know what's going on once they get down.
A few things in my conversation with the fellow from Yellowhead was having to use a bigger machine hence the bigger price tag, the horses must be sedated, another factor of course is the wind chill on these guys (flying through the air at -20 brrrr just thinking about it), the helicopter does not need to land but will long line instead if there is someone ready to clip them in. He figures 25 minutes back and forth between cabin area (or bowl) to the staging area. 2 hours total flying time.
I keep mentioning this, but these horses are now getting food, and as a friend and fellow snowandmudder said, these guys could end up being very well taken care of all winter by other snow and mudders and I believe it when I read everyones' major support for this.

So this is about 4 cents worth now, but I'm kind of thinking that the monetary donations (for the chopper) shouldn't happen until we know if it's even safe to move these horses out by chopper. There are some key people who have been dealing with these horses since Sunday, who probably have a lot to say. What do you think???

Just a quick update! SPCA will be in contact with me tonight after I get the run-down from Matt. There are developments with helicopters and the like, and we'll see what tomorrow brings.

I hope if animal cruelty or abandonment charges are laid that the name of the scumbag laywer is released to the public.

it should be made public anyways. can't be lible or slander if it factual information. release the name.....

has anyone notified any other news publications, or other media? they would be all over this, not only as a xmas "feelgood" story about efforts of the volunteers and community spirit shown by the area residents, but maybe in the interest of justice as well.....

Hey Glen, and Sara when are the horses planning to be moved? I'm very happy to hear that they have survived this long, After last weekend I had doubts that they would.

That is a great idea! "Snowmobiler's help horses!" What good be better at Xmas?! It appears Sara Olofsson is directly involved and knows what is going on. A quick call to ITV, CBC, CTV might get some great press for snowmobile enthusiasts.

Hey - although I may come off cranky - warms my heart to hear of all the effort you guys are going thru to get those ponies out, and that there are people lined up to take them. Had a run-in with a couple of "horsey women" at my buddy's place last night - so I was a little "loaded for bear" when I read this thread this morning. But - when everyone makes their donation to help out on the costs of getting these horses out - can I suggest you match it with a donation to the christmas charity of your choice? The ways things are going in the economy this year - I don't want there to be a bunch of disappointed kids this Xmas.

Wish I would have found this thread sooner. We were up Renshaw yesterday and saw the sleds at Km 27 and would have helped for a little while if we had known. The workout would have warmed us up in the wind.

We did see someone taking hay on the back of their sled.

My wife and I own a boarding stable and own horses. I feel terrible reading this because I am an avid sledder too. One thing to keep in mind is someone would have to arrange a vet to get in and trank those horses, because you couldn't get close to them with a chopper. Not sure what all the circumstances are and how freindly the animals are. Or fish and wildlife could trank them with a firearm but that maybe very risky with getting the right dose. I would be avaliable to offer advice or perhaps a horsetrailer if anyone can get it that far.

The horses are very freindly.. They don't even care about sleds running in the vicinity of them.. They took horse blankets up for them yesterday and should've got a shelter built.. From what i'm told the groomer is going to help out with pulling a sled trailer up the trail so that they dont have to be walked out the long trail to the parking lot..

So now having read all the threads.... What about leaving them there for the winter and organizing fedding. Maybe the groomer could take bales up. If a shelter could be consructed the horses would stick around for the food, and keep the snow packed around the shelter. Has anyone discussed this option?? Of course I'm all for getting them out and commend everyone for their efforts.

after reading this thread yesterday and being a hot topic at the local harley dealer Christmas party last night, i was wondering the same. if a shelter was built can they survive a winter up there if we all work together to get fed and water to them???

after reading all of this no one has mentioned sedating the horses and skimming them out avoiding the $5000 helicopter bill.
has anyone talked to the local trappers to see if this is possible.

just an idea that I did not see mentioned.
