Has anyone been down this road lately, looking at a Feb trip into Kakwa and this seems like the easiest (most lawful) route for the first trip.

Any help or comments are appreciated.

From the gp side of the he trail is usually very well groomed.

Yup
was smooth as glass pulling two skidder in our group and soft saddle bags and running boards full of biggest Jerry cans possible!!!!
Stayed three days and two nights in the then new Kakwa cabin.

Friggin wicked weekwnd.
Doo it again in a heartbeat.

Only place I seen to rival Renshaw in size.

A must do!!

How's the snow up there? Do you bring an air mattress, sleeping bag and BBQ or cook on the stove? Can a guy find his way around or need someone that knows the area?

Snow is relatively good right now, as for lodging unless you know someone with a sled camp or stay in your enclosed, you will have to stay in GP. A person could sled the area themselves but you would have a much more pleasant time riding with others,.. I am not one who advocates sledding alone, so if there are loners, I have asked them to sled with my group or try to find others.

Curious? Guys set up a camp for the season? Do they do it close to where they are staging from or way back?

Tin town is about 50-55km back from the kakwa cabin.

They stage and camp by two lakes which is a couple hours from Grande Prairie and pretty much the same location that they stage from. I know some people that camp at Kakwa so will spend a night at camp and come back the nest day.

There are 2 double bunk beds at the kakwa cabin and wood stove, its first come basis. There are a ton of people that use the cabin to warm up, best to haul stuff in during week when not busy. Better yet, camp at parking lot or air strip if you have portable accommodations.

Being the area is so large to get the ultimate out of your riding experience in kakwa I do recommend either finding someone who knows the area or hiring someone to guide you. As is stated in many other posts there can be over a couple hundred riders out there and unless you go to the cabin you may not see anymore than one or two others. The area is huge.
