SNOWMOBILING IN THE KOOTENAYS
The Kootenays offer an incredible range of snowmobiling opportunities . We have hundreds of miles of unploughed logging and mining roads that lace the mountains . From mellow rides through the valley bottoms on old railbeds to challenging alpine rides , the Kootenays have something to offer every level of snowmobiler .

The Nelson Snogoers groom a number of trails in the area (Check with Kootenay Sleds and Wheels or visit their web site at ) The Salmo Snodrifters also have a number of trails marked . Many of these trails wind up the mountains and have well tendered cabins for their club members use. All have wood stoves for those brave enough to spend the night !

Some of the more popular rides , as recommended in the Backroad Mapbook , are :

Nelson Area

Lemon Cr Rd (22km long)
Duhamel Cr FS Road to 6 mile Lake
Kokanee Glacier Road to Gibson Lake
Cedar Cr FS Road to Cody Cave Park near Ainsworth
Bonnington Range north of Champion Lakes Prov. Park
Barret Cr Road to Barret and Lost Lake - Both offer beautiful powder bowls . Caution is recommended during high Avalanche danger .
Stewart Cr to Erie Cr - Good full day ride .
Salmo /Creston Area

Char Cr Near the summit of the Salmo/Creston Highway , the Char Cr Road leads to a cabin . Kidd CR A logging road in the Kidd Creed drainage . North Star Mountain off Highway 3 , the Maryland Cr FS Road offers a good 17 km Ride south of North Star Mountain to Boundary Cr

If you need any directions to any of these trail heads or for trail conditions please call Kootenay Mountain Adventures toll Free 1 877 GDAY KMA (1 877 432 9562)

As the popularity of the back country experience is increasing , so are the number of unfortunate and avoidable accidents .

An understanding of snowpack and Avalanche danger are most definitely a prerequisite for an excursion into our Mountains. Each member of your party should carry avalanche transceivers , shovels and probes . At the beginning of each ride ask your buddies if they know how to use them . Make sure the transceivers are turned on . It is an easy thing to do . Take 9 hours out of your busy lives to take a basic avalanche course . It could save your life!
For avalanche bulletins visit the Canadian Avalanche Association Web Site at Welcome to avalanche.ca or call1 800 667 1105

Some sobering words from a survivor :

“ He died because I didn’t have a transceiver , probe and shovel . Neither did he . He died because we didn’t take nine hours out of our busy schedule to take an avalanche awareness course . Now I realize the importance of equipping myself with avalanche safety knowledge and search and rescue gear . I also realize that in the end it is up to each individual to be responsible for their safety .”

Carry extra gas .

Carry and extra belt .

Carry a First Aid Kit

Carry a small supply of emergency food .

Let people know where you are going and when you expect to return .

Please check with the local regardin Cariboo closures for the different areas, save yourself a fine and save the areas for future sledding!

Equipment preparation and trip planning are as important as each other . We are lucky enough to have access to some of the most spectacular snowmobiling in the world . Last year the peaks of the mountain ranges in the Kootenays had in excess of 50ft of snowfall!! Now that is a lot of powder!!! !Be prepared , have knowledge and have fun!!

Actually, KMA is no longer running as a business, for local (Porcupine Cr. and Erie-Stuart, Barret Lk) conditions, best bet is to contact salmo-fruitvale area sled club...other that that, good info...oh, kootenay sleds and wheels is also done...:p
