I keep one permanently installed. $500 is good insurance. Very easy to install and this one gives you 4-120v circuits and 1-220v or 6-120v circuits.

Google "Generlink". Takes Fortis 10 min to install. Then you plug in any 2 phase generator.

I've been looking at those for a while, got complacent because we haven't had many outages. A full nat.gas standby would be best, no gas jugs for the wife to pack when I'm working out of town

Costco had natual gas ones on at a good price and the beauty of NG is that if there is an outage, you don't have to worry about the local pumps being out of power to fill the jerry cans.

I have a 5800 stand alone gen set wired into the house that will keep us going in event of a major outage; all fridges/freezeers, various circuits for lighting, and microwave (15 amp stand alone receptacle as required by code). Wish I would have put the garage circuit on it as it is a pain operating the overhead doors.

Wicked wind all of a sudden (about an hour ago) got tractor out holding up a tree (again). Chunk of plywood from neighbor's place took a big chunk out of the corner of my garage, missed moho by 2 feet. Running backup genny. I guess Innisfail and all around us are no power.....

My wife drove by and the major damage is around the village mall and parkland mall. Trees are down all over central alberta. Talked to my Mom and Dickson has a big mess of downed trees also.

This is just south of parkland mall. Not many trees without damage in that green space now.

The 7500w genny hooked up through the Generlink worked awesome. Not exactly "tree hugger efficient" at about 1/2 gal per hour, but ran 4 fridges, a freezer, well pump, lights, 2 tvs, yard light, etc....only things we never ran was electric stove, dryer, and A/C. Ran er for 16.5 hrs until power restored.
Spent most of today straightening, staking trees. Drove to Spruceview CoOp for rope, trees snapped all over, one barn roof gonzo, a few places missing shingles. What a mess!

Wasn't as bad south of you Dave, I'm in NB but wife said just a couple came down around me. Think the wind storm last month took all the weak ones
