I have read post by (Lost) on loud sleds. I have mixed thoughts. I have a rural setting & also a town res. Trail system goes right by cows & near house,In town can hear sleds in background... & does not appear very loud @ all. Cows don't seem to mind either. I have 3 mtn sleds 700/800 & 900 2/cans & one w/pipes. I donot ride on streets, just load sometimes in town, sleds just enough rev to load. A neighour has a Harley motorbike that has STOCK exhaust that is @ a idle as loud as my sleds... & starts near every morning to go to work in summer months & revs her up to leave going thru neighourhood to work.... no one complains. Other guy has a Dodge diesel w/straight pipe exhaust & goes to work everyday... revs her up to pickup speed to get going to work..... no one complains. Some people have so called crotch rockets w/stock loud exhaust when reved up....no one complains. These are all vehicles that drive in & thru out cities & towns everyday & night.... Sleds are seasonal. (Am I missing something here). All three sleds, the first thing to go was the exhaust & it will be last thing to be put back on. I understand I will piss some people off but lets get real.
This is my opinion.

I think no one complains because a lot of people think if the person is disrespectfull enough to operate a vehicle what way, they are not the kind of person you want to get into it with.

If someone feels someone else is plain unconsiderate then unless you have a lot of b*lls, why would you want to get into it with someone that has already stated they do not care what you think? But it still pisses them off, and people resond in other ways that are safe for them like talking to goverment about just clossing that annoying off road activity down for good.

I like off road vehciles, and I like my performance, and I like my Dodge CDT. But you know the guy next door to me that does hot shooting with his Dodge CDT with tame intake/exaust mods, but still has a muffler, does wake me up when he starts up at night on occasion.

And the guys that operate strait pipes just plain annoy me, pick ups, sleds, hogs, and especially hiway trucks and jakes. :plugears:

I don't care if they are a mile off, I still hear that buzzing and when I am out side it bugs me, I don't want to hear it. The piped sledders make me hate sledders period and I'm a sledder. Even in the mountains when I stop for lunch I hate that pipe rippping away on the other side of the valley when you are trying to have a convesation with someone. Get away!

There ya go, you got my opinion. :twocents:

I agree those harleys are way too lound, but some cans on sleds are too loud (eg:MBRP), I had one and started to get tired of it, switched to D&D instead. I decided my hearing is more important. But I think it comes down to respect, when I'm sledding late and pass close to homes or passing through town, I wont rev it up as much (don't want to attract too much attention).

pipes and cans

I only sled in the mountains and on one or two occasions at big foots farm. I like the sound of a sled with a can in the mountain, especially when you’re watching a video of the last days ride. Nothing beats it. I know a lot of you guys commented about how you like the sound of a sled and not the heavy music when you’re watching your videos. I have never had to deal with the sound of a sled in the city, I agree that some of those Harleys can be loud, but everyone has there toys. People may be sweating too much over the small stuff.

guys don't buy cans to piss people off. they buy them to gain power and lose weight. IF your gonna say pipes on sleds should not be aloud then all those cars and bikes and trucks and quads should not be aloud.

Exhaust

Myself and Lost have been yipping about this topic for a long time now. Put yourself in a house beside a trail system and it 20 below outside. Its so cold out you can here your dog drop a log in the backyard. Now a altered exhaust sled come past your house at 6000 + rpm. Now what do you hear. Do you thing over time that your tollowance of this noise will be less. You bet So what can we do but try to keep as quiet as we can by running stock exhaust. AGAIN just my 2 cents worth:rant:

You're right! Actually in many cases they are not legal but cops are too busy to ticket everyone. Also there are loop holes in the laws that help people get around it. For example the hiway traffic act requires some type of muffler on heavy trucks, but it does not get too specific. I have heard that guys who are running strait pipes on heavy trucks are getting around it with a small under the hood resonator. There is little weight savings on a heavy truck. They *want* to make noise :beep: . And they don't turn the jake off when going through town at 2am either (at least not my town). That engine brake really pops with strait pipes :plugears: . The only argument for the drivers not noticing how much noise they make is that they are probably deaf.   </rant off>

Anyway, the issue is about the average folk not wanting snowmobilies anywhere near them, and one of the factors is that they can hear the sled, even way off, and it bugs them. Then they complain to local government and when the local government has had enough of the complaints they write a bylaw to shut off-road activity down for good and heir special constables to enforce it like strathcona county has. Guess how tuff it is to establish a trial system in strathcona now.... (am I still ranting? oops :chatterbox: )

Loud Pipes

YUP, I'M TOO LOUD, AND I AGREE WITH EVERYONE. I DOO HAVE THE STOCK EXHAUST, BUT I BOUGHT MY SLED AS A MOUNTAIN SLED FIRST AND FOREMOST, AND I ONLY RIDE TRAIL SYSTEMS ONCE IN A BLUE MOON, ON SPECIAL OCCASIONS, SUCH AS THIS LAST ANGEL'S SANTA'S TOY RIDE:Holidayslol: .
MY SLED IS PROBABLY QUIETER THAN STOCK AT IDLE, BUT THE BRP EXHAUST IS "VERY" LOUD:plugears: WHEN PINNED OR UNDER LOAD. I WAS REPECTING THE FARMERS AND ACREAGES IN THE ARE AND NEVER "PINNED" HER AROUND AND RESIDENCES.
I SUSPECT SOME OF THE COMPLAINING ON THE LAST TRIP WAS ABOUT ME, AND IF IT WAS I'M SORRY:sorry: , AND I WILL APOLOGIZE TO WHATEVER INDIVIDUALS IF REQUIRED. IF YOU DON'T WANT ME ON THE TRAILS, I WON'T BE, BUT TOO BAD FOR YOU, YOU'LL HAVE TO SUFFER WITH ME, BECAUSE I DOO HAVE THE STOCK EXHAUST, AND IF NEED BE, I GUESS I'LL INSTALL IT JUST FOR A RIDE LOCALLY:p .
JUST THOUGHT I'D RESPOND A LITTLE BECAUSE I DOO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY ABOUT MY LOUD EXHAUST. I DOO AGREE WITH EVERYONE ABOVE:agree: ABOUT ALL THE LOUD VEHICLES OUT THERE, AND THEIR AFTERMARKET EXHAUSTS. OUR SHOP HERE DOES INSTALL HEADERS ETC. AND ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS DO SAY: "INTENDED FOR OFF HIGHWAY USE, OR COMPETITION".
THE OLD "PLANES, TRAINS' AND AUTOMOBILES" SYNDROME ONLY THIS CASE THEY'RE ALL TOO LOUD. HOW MANY DIESEL PICK-UPS ARE OUT THERE, THAT HAVE LOUD EXHAUSTS?? SOME OF THESE "LOUD" TRUCKS ARE EVEN OWNED BY SOME CLUB MEMBERS, AND EVEN SOME OF THE FARMERS(THAT WE GO BY) AND ACREAGE OWNERS, AND I KNOW OF AN RCMP MEMBER, ETC ETC.
QUADS, NOW THERES ANOTHER TOPIC FOR LOUD EXHAUSTS, BUT I'LL LEAVE THAT ONE ALONE. I KNOW FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WHEN CAMPING AND AT 2:30 IN THE MORNING SEVERAL QUADS DRIVE THROUGH THE CAMPSITE ROAD(I THINK THEY WOKE UP THE WHOLE CAMPSITE):plugears: . I WON'T RANT ABOUT QUADS, BECAUSE LIKE I SAID, THATS A WHOLE OTHER TOPIC FOR A THREAD ON THIS SITE>
GUESS I'M RANTING, I'LL STOP NOW
THERE'S MY :twocents: WORTH

Now there is a new line of thinking that is going to go a long way in keeping the trail systems open and expanding:doh: :nono:

Loud!

Yes i will admit mine is very loud, but very rarely do i ride low altitude. I built my sled for the hills and the engine package i put together runs the best with these pipes (PSI Modblasters). I believe there will never be a clear winner in this debate you will always have the fors and against. Sleds are just a tiny issue in the noise problem. Heck this is the first year in a few that you've been able to ride for any length around the local areas. I think bikes are way more of a noise problem than sleds because they're allowed right in the local population of the towns and citys where as sleds are mostly rural use. Plus i come from a dragracing background so loud is kind of the norm. J.C. Higgins.

I got seperated from my group in the Renshaw on Friday. I knew they were only a couple of minutes ahead of me. So I just shut off my sled for a second, heard their "loud pipes" rippin' in the next bowl, fired mine back up and headed on over. I run SLP pipes on my sled into the SLP suitcase so my sled is pretty quiet....but I bought this sled with these pipes. In the mountians I love loud pipes, or stingers. In residential areas...no; in the backcountry.....the louder the better.:jerry:

Loud Pipes

I'm in the same boat as Shredder, I bought my 700 RMK with pipes a few years back before the noise issue was front and center. I have no stock exaust so the pipes are the way I ride. This is the sled I ride locally.
I recognize the need to respect the local home owners and will do my best in the future to reduce the throttle when close to homes.

Yeah in the mountains, pipes save lives. But the question is what do you think about loud pipes near urban areas, not in the mountains. And on trails, loud pipes/stingers lose trails near urban areas, end of story. I personally haven't even ridden on a trail, except getting up to the riding areas in the mountains.

Do I think

I think that we should change our ways not tell people to move. Not the best idea yet.

Some of you are not getting it. Move from beside a trail system??? Hell he owns the land we ride on and next year there will be a gate and no trespass sign. There goes another trail system and now you get to trailer even further for your day ride. You are forgetting that the land owner that you just pissed off has the power here, not us. Barry

Barry you are right. We have to keep the land owners happy or we are S.O.L for a tail system.

Apparently I was alittle too hasty on my initial thoughts. If your sled it too loud and you do not like it and your friends doen't like it - buy ear plugs.

If you live too close to a trail system, my thoughts have changed. I appoligise to the farmer or rancher for my words, however after recently moving to a new community and purchasing a one acre lot with a small exclusive executive home we have come to realise that 300' out our back yard there is a ravine which is a host to numberous snowmobiles both with and without pipes, which are LOUD. Simply put it is part of life and some how it could always be worse (could open a land fill beside your property?)

As I said recently moved had the priviledge of living next to highway 16 near Jasper listening to all the Hogs go by (yes, that pissed me off) then I went out and bought one so that I could piss others off too. Make the best of life it is too short!

Without loud pipes think of how many cool climbs you would miss out on,It is somewhat of a spectator sport and I think loud pipes are ok although some are a little overboard.
