Patent lawyer first, if you already have some type of drawing, they will research if there is already a patent on your idea and if not, they will get the patent for you.

I just went through this whole process of patent process and just received my patent number there is numerous lawyers out there also there is a Canadian tax rebate under research and development called (SHRED) Look into this log all of your hrs/time and effort put forth any prototypes built R&D etcetera I received a real nice kick back and has to be all Canadian made.
Can be minimum costs to very expensive, however you can file for a US provisional as well this will get you one year until you have fully developed your invention. Costs somewhere around $1000.00 to $1500.00 to do this then you’re covered. After one year then the real costs start rolling in depends on the patent you are going for.

Step one would be PM me all the details of your invention and any drawings, R&D you have done and we will go from there! Glad I could help.

Good luck with it. Most ideas need the right market...If you think you have a market for your idea, it is probably worth pursuing...

in the states Many people start to document their ides with a "poor man's patent" basically make all notes and drawings of the idea and it's functionality/uses and seal them in an envelope mailing it to yourself, sealed and the post mark can give some semi positive refernc as to when you came upon the idea etc. incase someone tries to poach your idea.
caveat: I am not a lawyer nor have I stayed in any hotels in the last six months.
but I do tend to drink like a lawyer
