Cell phones in Mexico

I am heading out on a vacation to the Mayan and I want to know if anyone can give me some info about using cell phones there. I went last year and just used it as well as text and I got a 1200 bill when I got home. I don't want a repeat of that this year so what are my options? I also have a MIKES phone and I was told that it would also work in Mexico and I wouldn't have to pay any long distance charges. Please any info would be greatly appreciated.

Call you provider and they will help you prorate an International plan for your trip...my wife is in Palm Springs...we did it last week...no problems.

You're on holidays, leave the phone at home........

Last time I was in the Mayan I texted home all the time, no extra charges...I'm with Telus...didn't make any calls though.

ya, we did the same..... No extra texting charges...... Also did some phone calls, but it wasn't bad, price wise!!

Watch it if you have a data phone like an i-phone or blackberry my wifes boss was in Mexico and because his is synced to his email he didn't use but left it on when he got back he got a $800 phone bill for roaming. He never made a phone or sent a text.

You should be alright using the Mike part, providing you have the North American package. Six of us have them, and they work in Mexico and Peru with no charges. We do not get nailed roaming charges. If we use them as a cell phone, we get beat up on long distance and air time.

is you use data MAKE SURE TO TURN IT OFF!!!!!! roughtly 50$ a megabite. brother found out asap wiht a 1100$ cell bill.

other wise when iwas in ixtapa. texted all the time. and it was about 30$ extra. you do pay somestuff. call your provider and they will explain it.

I just got back from playa del carmen and what I did was go to walmart there and bought phone for 40.00 bucks and a 200 peso card and cost me 5.50peso per 30 min call....Cheap. and now I have a phone when I go down or I could let you use mine if you want just buy phone card when you get there...Pm me if you want.

I was in Puerto Vallarta in January and just got my phone bill with no extra charges on it. I have a BB with phone. Did not use the phone oe send e-mails but turned on the BB every few days just to check e-mails. I had received about 40 e-mails without any extra charges.

Thanks for the offer , but I am going to use skpe on my iphone. I can shut off the data so that is covered. I would love nothing better then not having to use the phone but I am a business owner and don't have much choice in the matter , as well I have a little boy that I am going to miss that I will probably talk to every day lol. This is mom and dads first trip away from him for this length of time.
