Bringing a sled back from US

Good day all,

Just curious if anyone has ever bought a sled or ATV in the States and brought it back into Canada. If so, what do you need to have to do so?

IF NOSRX1 OR BIGIQ? ARE ON THE SITE, THEY HAVE BOTH BROUGHT SLEDS BACK FROM THE U.S......... I'M SURE THEY WILL HELP YOU OUT SOON. WHAT ARE YOU THINKIN' OF BRINGIN' BACK FROM THE STATES??? I'M GONNA PICK UP A 4 PLACE ENCLOSED TRAILER THIS FALL SOME TIME FROM THE STATES, MAYBE WE CAN MAKE A JOINT VENTURE?? KEEP ME IN MIND :twocents:

Where abouts you headed? I have been looking at sleds in Idaho mostly. But there is one in Minnesota I really like too.

I don't know if it works the same in both directions but I've bought a dirt bike in Canada and brought it into the US.

It was actually kind of a pain in the neck but I saved enough money that it was worth it.
The dealer I bought my bike from in Fernie, BC had sold many bikes to guys down here so he knew what paperwork I needed to have on hand. It still took me almost two hours to get across the border. First the guys didn't believe the bill of sale I had was legit, then they didn't know what forms I needed to fill out. Then after they figured that out I still had to leave a couple hundred dollar deposit. After they did their check and determined that I bought the bike legally they refunded my deposit money.
That was 12 years ago in 95, hopefully things have changed since then.

Hey there JohnAB, yes i have brought both sleds and quads back from the states, yes also it can be a pain in the butt, and you will spend a few hours there. You will need a bill of sale and a title, or salvage title. The law has changed slightly, but the last time I was notified that you need to fax all docouments to the US crossing 72hrs prior to arriving at the border. I think its for export reasons. Once at the border, there is a little paperwork to do and some things with registrars of imported vehicles. Pay alittle duty and your done. you must also have a dealership run a safety conformance on your make and model, then take it all to your nearest Canadian tire for an inspection. You need to do this to get it licenced and registared....
One word of warning: Take all steps necessary to insure that whatever you buy is not STOLEN....or you will be seriously hung out to dry.....trust me on this....i was suspected of this the first time i brought a sled back and was there 7+ hrs and almost went to the clink.
The best bet would be to phone the border in which you tend to cross at and find out ALL the info from them.

I just imported a trailer from North Dakota and I thought it was relativly easy,get a broker and deal with a company that is familiar with the process.Broker fee's and gst have to be paid right away,this transaction costed about me about three hundred bucks plus gst,The inspection for the gov so you can register, it is free.
If you have a broker they have everything ready at the border and they were very helpful guiding me through the process.
May try again real soon if I find a fifth wheel.

I agree catmando, a broker makes it all easy. If I were doing that I would use our company broker to make thinks simple.

Actually, there is no duty paid on items made in North America, including ATV's and sleds. You will pay the GST, however. Don't try to use a phony bill of sale, with a lower price than you actually paid. They can impound the item you are importing to Canada, and the vehicle you are transporting it with. The fine would also be substantial.

Most sled and ATV manufacturers STRICTLY prohibit dealers from selling new units to Canadians, so get an American to buy your unit and sell it to you, if you know someone. Watch out on the title, however. Not all states issue titles, if they do there can be a delay.

As someone else said, call the border crossing you intend to use and ask the pertinent questions, or use a broker.

For a few hoops to jump through, you can save a considerable amount.

Incidentally, riding mowers also sell for considerably less stateside.

Bought a 53 Buick From Ebay this spring from Rhode Island and had a hassle with the Title papers. Trucking company said it must have a title with the car inside for the driver but Rhode Island has different rules than other states so just be aware of what is needed and DONT try to fudge the system. I know that I should of bought my new sled from the States. Right Albert.

I've had four friends recenlty buy vehicles and/or sleds from the US. They have all said it was relatively easy if you have your paper work completed properly prior to the pickup. They saved around $10,000 on the vehicles and a couple thousand on the sleds.

As a matter of fact I'm about to go through the process myself with a newer truck. As I get coached through the process I'll let you know what I learn.

Guy I work with brought a Harley up from the USA and ran into title problems at the border. Because it was on a courier they just kept charging him for the delay. In the end it cost him a lot. Lesson he learned was to make sure all your paperwork is correct and contact the border your crossing to make sure you are clear on what is required.

Goodleo and I just brought in 2 2007 vector mountains from utah you need your bill of sales any recall notices showing work completed you have to pay gst and an atv tax but you do not pay duty.
