Whats good for smackin thistles around the yard that won't kill the grass?

They have sprayed the trees under the line beside my property a couple time, and mulched once since 2006.

The poison they use kills the saplings dead but the downside was it looks shatty for a while. (Maybe not a concern for fence line control). But the all the saplings turns brown. The dead leaves don’t even fall of the trees come winter and then maybe another season. Then it takes a few years of them standing dead before they will fall down easy if your driving over them. But lasts for a bunch of years.

The one Time they mulched under the line the saplings sprouted out the mulched beaten root systems very quickly.

Our county uses a blend for woody growth in ditches. Starts with garlon and has a few other undisclosed additives.

Ouch that's pricy. I pay about $130 for the same thing from UFA. I spray my 3 acre yard once a year, and I don't have no dandelions, thistles, clovers, and many other weeds, just grass. Trillion is same product when there out. I combine this with some green with envy to have a nice green yard. Anyway PAR III is awesome, I recommend wearing a respirator and protective clothing, if not expect some issues. Sprayed once without and you feel like crap for that day and the following.

Prestige xl is another good one. Pricey but will control thistle, dandelions and just about everything else but not kill the grass.
Curtail m if mixed to strong will stunt the grass. Generally doesn’t kill it but will sure slow the growth lol the old farmer measure cuz your in a hurry

No, at UFA you will need to show that your on an acredege or farm, I have a parkland country card when I moved to this area. At least they gave me a card, never got a GBCA card, lol.

That never happens around these parts. I was thinking since they were so close to flowering I would mow them down to give me time to get set up for spraying.

Any of the broad leaf weed killers will stunt the grass if mixed too strong. I use Trillium at the recommended strength and it works good. I mowed the thistle last week as the weather will not cooperate. I wont spray any herbicide until the spruce are past new growth and fruit trees are done flowering. Will spray next week if mother nature opens a 24 hr window.

Trillion is not in the Herbicide Blue Book. Can it be under a different name?

The best time to spray thistles is in the fall after the first frost. The plant starts taking nutrients into the roots to survive the winter. A shot of Roundup or Lontrel will give it the death spiral you want. Spraying at this time will burn it down for a month or so then it will regrow. If you spray now its best when they are in flower. A damaged plant won't take in much chemical as it shuts down.
