Any gardeners out there??

No vegetables in the garden...a few herbs and a big azz rhubarb plant.
This one ends up jams and sauces.

...also loves her Hosta's, I think she's got 15+ different ones?
Low maintenance and hard to kill.

Finally got a beefsteak tomato coming. Taken me few years. Without a greenhouse it’s pretty tough growing these big boys here. Anyone else enjoy and toasted tomato sammich with mayo, salt and pepper?

Be diligent. Pick it regularly so that it doesn't go to seed. Being a retired guy, you have lots of time so get out there and look after it!!
The same sort of thing with clover in the grass. The more it goes to seed the more you have. Clover you can spray with Killex but it is a little sketchy to use Killex in the garden!

landscape fabric over the entire garden, and then leave an openings for planting. Next year it is all gone.

For a new gardener in the Shuswap, I'm quite pleased with our first attempt at a vegetable garden in years. Disappointed in the radishes (full of maggots) but will rectify that next year. A few "location" problems for some plants as sun is lacking in some areas. Irrigation turned out great, weeds were minimal, and I am looking to expand for next year. Growing season is definitely much longer than the high elevation (4300' or 1300m) of Elkford in the upper Elk Valley.

Carrots are edible but still only a taster. Peas have pods already. Lettuce is great. Potatoes, well the tops are great and have been in bloom for over a week. Cucumbers are starting to climb the trellis. Beets, beans and onions are looking good. The onions will probably have maggots just like the radishes. We have used diatomaceous earth and used coffee grounds but will get some proper powder for next year.

Not 100% sure this will help your root maggot probably something in your soil...but it certainly will not hurt the problem, everyone that gardens should have these out.

I just ordered some of these. just found bad maggot problem. Also going to try using some diatomaceous earth around the onions as well.

Was reading and is suggested to rototill in the fall and spring to bust up the larvae and plant onions and other root crops elsewhere next year. all in an attemt to break the life cycle of the fly-larvae... What a pain!

You can buy some yellow plastic dishes too and fill them with dish soap + water, they will dive bomb over your head to the land in there as your putting it down. The sheets work better though. We have had 3 days above 20 c.

Tomatillo plant looking like a tree.

The spaghetti squash vines growing a couple inches per day now. And getting crowded by potatoes.

Giant sunflower over 6 feet above the bed and still going.

Picked the potatoes Saturday.
16 X 5 gallon pails, yield about 1/3 less than normal.
Had the killer frost last weekend for everything that was not covered.
My mom is 84 and if you are slow she is right in there showing you how to clean dirt off.
She is still a hoot and keep you laughing and out hustle most!
My kids are amazed by how much she does.
A good get together!
