I am a cat guy. My cats are my best friends when I am home. You won’t regret getting one! They’re so much easier to take care of then dogs( I am talking in the city), don’t need to take them for walks or let them outside to sh@t. You can leave for weeks and just need to leave food out and toilet seat up so they can drink lol. I don’t let them outside! I don’t like the cats that roam the neighbourhood and crap in the neighbours gardens. To me that’s people being lazy and not looking after there animals.

Cats love empty boxes. You can check around at the local animal shelters, most shelters spay and neuter and give them all their shots. Also shelters always have kittens, and most shelters give them lots of attention so they would be used to people handling them. If you get free random kitten be aware if they are simi feral it may take time for the kitten to adjust and could be a bit wild. Difference between feral kittens and human held and raised is obvious. When you get the kitten give her time to adjust as she will be scared. Place an empty box next to your keyboard so kitten doesn’t sleep on your keyboard while you are working. And cats love cat nip.

You might want to hang the Christmas tree on the ceiling. Cats love Christmas trees.

https://www.calgaryhumane.ca/adopt/cost-to-adopt/. This site will give you an idea in the process to adopt and what is available if you choose that direction. The youngest kittens seem to be 6 months old on the site. Even if you choose not to adopt it gives you an idea of what is out there. I do suggest to surprise your wife in letting her pick the kitten. Make an appointment get everything ready and than take the wife for lunch than take a Detour to either the shelter or where you will pick the kitten up.

Every morning, I play fetch with the cat and her toy. She will bring it back to me, drop it in between my feet and rub my feet telling me it’s there.

I'm trying to find a pic of "KATTY SHACK" that I built for our cats, it's a box/house on top of a 4x4 post from floor to ceiling covered in carpet, has 5 shelves about a foot apart with the scratching part at the bottom.
Pic was taken on a 35mm camera [ Ya, I'm old]. I'll keep looking. Cats loved it, 7.5 ft up looking down on you.

I have a cat and ive gone through a few different brands of cat litter, the best by far I found is Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra Cat Litter, from Pet Smart. You defiantly get what you pay for with cat litter. Cheaper stuff you will have dust and smelly litter box. I clean mine every third day, and change it out once a month. No odors.

My cats a British Shorthair, A bit pricy but worth it, doesn't shed much, hyper allergenic cat, very good and very clean, doesn't scratch any furniture and never on tables or counters. Indoor only cat. Never had a mouse or if I have a moth or fly come in there usually wiped out fast.

This Saturday is the big day..... Pretty much bought complete kitten starter pack. Tomorrow night Jacky thinks we have a date night.........But more like a 30 min drive south to pick up a rescue kitty. She has no idea that this is happening lol
But she did end up telling me, that she wanted black and white, so it would look like TJ's cousin lol
Here is her Kijiji pic

LOL...….. TJ is slowly falling in love with her, she is more interested in checking out her new house, rather than caring about him.
Another reason I got this one, is she was born into a house of dogs, cats and kids.
