So I’m originally from Ontario. Been in Grande Prairie for 11 years now. I’m in the HVAC business so naturally it’s a little busy right now with the cold weather. I frequent the coast a few times a year and my family particularly likes it in the winter just to get away from real winter even for a few days. This past weekend I was in Vancouver and it really hit me. Flying from Calgary to Vancouver, my flight was a little over an hour. Just a one hour flight puts you in a completely different economy. What a change in environment. It snowed Sunday in Vancouver and there was just over an inch by supper. No one knew what to do. -4 but felt like -8 with the wind. Every bar and restaurant I was in we had to keep our coats on. It was crazy. Don’t get me wrong. The first snow of the year in Alberta is the same. No one seems to remember how to drive. This is not a rant. I was more caught off guard. I watched a hotel staff dump a bag of salt on a step and then try to spread it with a broom. People were cranky, natural gas fireplaces all over the place and none of them on. I asked our waiter why it wasn’t turned on cause the thermostat said 15 and his reply was “oh, didn’t know we had that”. I left there Monday thinking to myself man, what is going on with our society. This is Canada. Yea yea. I know it’s Vancouver and it’s diverse, but so is Toronto, so is Montreal. Living in Grande Prairie we are surrounded by farming and oil and gas. I try to teach my kids about the work that goes into getting a product to market. Like the work that goes into grocery’s, construction and maintenance. Keeping your vehicles on the road. I don’t want to turn this into a political post but Vancouver is in a bubble. Your housing prices are unrealistic, the fisheries are taking a beating. Mayors blaming the energy sector for there problems meanwhile social media is full of squatters happily living and boasting about it tax free. Meanwhile on the east side of B.C. we’re trying to keep public, Canadian owned lands accessible. I’m not against pot. All the power to ya. I just think there are a few other things that are more important that should have been tabled this past year. The cookie jar is almost empty. Canada needs to pull back the ranes on being a international comfort sweater.

There is zero common sense in Vancouver, BC. You are not imagining things.
Sometimes I can't believe that some people are able to eat with a fork and spoon. They are that dumb.

Hahaha!!!
