Olympics and Canada

Goes to vote today. It would definitely be nice to see some other income coming in or alternative leadership in place. 2026 is a ways out it may seem but I think when it comes to the Olympics you can never start to early. Is the nhl going to be at the next Winter Olympics?

I’m not a Cagarian, but as an Albertain I am against the olympics being held here. With cost overruns and financial uncertainty there is too much risk involved. If the ‘yes’ comes out ahead, and Calgary city council goes ahead with the bid, a small minority of the albertain populace will place a huge financial burden on the remainder of the taxpayers. If Cagary wants to host the olympics than the entire cost should be funded by their city. It’s bad enough that the provincial government is picking up the 4 million dollar tab for the plebiscite.

56.4% no. Unfortunately it’s not binding. Let’s hope that the Calgary Olympic Committee and the Calgary City Council listens to the voters and withdraws their 2026 bid. The other unfortunate thing is the way the plebiscite motion was put forward to city council, it will take what’s called a super majority vote (a 2/3’s rather that a 51% vote) to end the bid. And Mayor Nenshi seems like he would rather lay down on his sword than listen to Calgarian’s.

I heard the funding from both levels of government were dependent on a Yes vote so hopefully this should about do it for this nonsense.

The IOC can pay for their own damn games!

Well here is the reality. I came to work today and told our 20 staff not to expect raises this year as a direct result of not having the Olympics. I am not punishing them in any way but without the projects we bid on we just don't have any extra money in this crappy economy. Our Calgary, Edmonton, BC and Manitoba people are all now stagnant at their current levels. All would have been treated the same if the Calgary branch was doing well as a result of the Olympics. I'm sure we are not the only company that has offices in western Canada.

Some look at the olympics as a money pit, I look at it as opportunity for businesses to gain on being awarded capital projects for upgrading facility’s to modern standards.

Were the facility’s dismantled after the 88 games or were they repurposed?

I hope to god the economy is back to normal by 2026 and people are not basing the vote in the present circumstances.

I d prefer to spend my money in canada to see the olympics not in another country.

Wouldn't it make sense for the various levels of government to put the allocated funding to a good use in Canada now. The Alberta Government could build some schools or a hospital or two. The Canadian Government could put the $1.75B towards a pipeline or a refinery. The City of Calgary could build a field house, a new arena, more flood mitigation, and a myriad of other projects.

I don't see that happening. The Alberta Government may give money to the American voices to protect the back-country. The Canadian Government will likely spend it overseas. Lord knows what the City of Calgary will do. Already $10M has been spent on the process and that could have built a few schools.

I think Calgary has a bigger challenge to face than hosting the Olympics!! Their tax base is quickly eroding (businesses leaving the down town or have disappeared all together) meaning a potential huge increase in municipal taxes for smaller businesses and individual property owners. Maybe the Olympics would have helped stimulate the economy? But I don't think it would have been enough. With the economy still limping along it is going to take a huge positive effort by the Provincial & Federal Governments (currently that's not likely) to bring everyone out of this stagnant economy.

Nenshi is sure putting on a pout. It might be sinking in that his influence is pretty minimal in the overall scheme of things. Now he's whining that the province and feds haven't talked to him since the plebiscite. For some reason he figures the province should still pony up $700M to Calgary because they had said they would chip in that amount for the Olympics. He gets my vote for the third member of the new 3 stooges along with Notley and Trudeau.

So last night on the news, they interviewed Calgary Mayor Nenshi. Even though the vote was a resounding "NO" and it is now a "dead end idea", Nenshi still expects that the Provincial and Federal govt's should cough up the money that they offered towards the Olympics so it can be put it towards Calgary infrastructure...........Really??....what a MAROON!
