Have seen this in fires.
A room with the door closed survives a lot better.

It would really surprise me if those flimsy MDF doors really do anything. I have solid doors in my house, I can see them making a lot bigger difference.

Any door, even a hollow core one will protect the room behind the door. I’ve seen it lots of times. It’s the smoke, not the fire that usually kills people. Children’s rooms particularly should have the doors closed since kids usually don’t wake up from the noise of a smoke detector. Keeping the doors closed gives the extra few minutes that can make the difference.

If the mdf door is a rated door the core will be treated with fire retardant.
Rated doors have all passed burn tests.
Door not rated you likely have about 10 minutes before fail in a fire.

years ago our alarm which are hard wired went off (from smoke wood stove) one in each of the kids room, I ran up stairs because I thought they would be freaking out and they were both asleep.

fire ratings like that are for direct flame impingement. The door not subjected to direct flame will last much longer. A typical room and contents fire in a bungalow will fill the main floor with toxic smoke to non survivable levels in 10 minutes or so. If the fire doesn’t get a supply of fresh air , like from a window breaking from the heat or someone opening a door, the fire will die down and smoulder making it hotter, smokier and less survivable. That’s why the closed doors, smoke detectors and getting the hell out fast saves lives.
