Proposed Tougher Distracted Driving Laws

Nice that you can eat while driving, until you see the lady I saw driving down the road eating from a bowl held at her face, with chop-sticks.

This law is stupid. We should look at the big picture and spend the money on education not enforcement.

This law is stupid. We should look at the big picture and spend the money on education not enforcement.

Agreed, so many people seem to follow along with this stupid assumption that you can fix every problem with another new law. You can't legislate morality, or common sense. And to imagine that the suggestion would be to leave enforcement ,of an ambiguous or unclear law to the discretion of some police officers and pretend cops , is scarey at best.

we need to have a legal person on here, that's like when they spent millions on gun registration and that went out the window. I just hope I get a good understanding judge when I go ffkkkk

So what’s your solution? Ignore distracted driving? Shrug your shoulders when someone texting runs a red and maims/kills someone? What if that someone was a member of your family?

Yep. Hike the fines. Same for littering! Education / PSAs don't work. $$ is still king and surest way to cure most of the issue is to hit people in the wallet. Tired of watching people sailing along head down texting. I could easily go so far as support a rat line for DD & littering - if a ticket is issed the rat gets a piece of the cheese. Would likely have to be in effect for a short time till behaviours are modified.

I think the fine and demerit point system needs to be looked at.

People are not getting it. Or is it businesss and jobs make people stay connected for work?

Are businesses making people check e mails ?

Seems people can’t drive across Leduc without texting someone.

See it it all the time. Eat sammich, coffee, fix makeup and text.

I don’t have the solution.

But it is a problem...

The same governments and municipalities that promote this law , also allows Electronic advertising billboards designed to attract all drivers attention near almost every busy intersection in most cities, portable advertising signs, drive thru coffee and food outlets, drive thru liquor stores selling single cold beers ????? , turn a blind eye to these morons driving around with their floofy little pets on their lap or hanging out drivers window, issue tickets to someone sitting in a parking lot talking on phone with motor running (me) , hide at the far end of a school zone and stop speeders to ticket, turn a blind eye to existing laws like littering , cigarette butts out windows, pedestrians wandering around out of crosswalks, our out of control highway driving habits, etc . Unfortunately I think it's about the money as usual. It may stop a fe w people , but most just see it as another type of tax. Is it a bad thing , you bet it is. so pass another law, make it a monetary penalty , like the other 500 laws we have like photo radar. Go ahead and speed all you want folks, just send in x $ each time we catch you, kind of like a pay to speed program . Speeding and talking on the phone is terrible, but if you pay the fine we mail you , all good.
And I don't know the answer, maybe start putting signal blockers on the car keys or in the vehicle, maybe pull your license for 30 days 1 St offence 90 days next time. Allowing the advertising along hi ways and city streets obviously to pull attention from the road then ticketing a driver for not watching the road seems a bit stupid doesn't it ? And unfortunately the enforcement is so often left to the discretion of some less than stellar peace officers and bylaw twits, so often seemingly motivated more by revenue grabbing or worse by power tripping.
Dont really know all the answers, But attempting to pass a law for every possible situation isn't working.

just wait.....your Trudeau govt is rebuilding the registry using the same building blocks of the failed old one........I guess spending 2 billion on something that didn't work doesn't phase him or his followers... :rant:

Like I said if you can juggle bowling balls and drive safely, go right ahead. If you fail to drive properly (phone or no phone) yank your ass into a driving course that you have a real chance of not getting your licence back. My question to you is "Should we be removing nice people from our roads if they are hazards due to poor driving habits or ability?" This could be your sweet grandma, a single father that needs to drive to support his kids, maybe you or one of your kids? This is were the problem is, we are reluctant to make decisions purely on testing individuals or real driving offences they are charged with. Your solution is to make more laws is ludicrous when the real problem is being ignored. Don't use the fact that people get maimed or killed because I bet the stats do not get better once phones are made disabled by law once they are moving over 5km/hr.

Used to be a law called ‘Driving with undue care and attention’, is this law not on the books anymore? It should have sufficed all by itself if enforced properly.

getting ticketed LOL. cause passing a law works so well ????? Smoking weed now legal and we have government sanctioned safe injection sites for hardcore drugs ???? Yep, pass another law , all fixed ????

Yes it is what we should use instead of distracted driving law. It is still there but too stiff to hand out as the people may revolt. Really as long as the crime fits the punishment, go for it.

personally fines work but only to a certain degree. Take their license away for 30 days will definitely wake a person up. I have been personally touched by texting and driving as my best friend lost his 19 year son as the driver was texting and crossed the centre line between Vernon - Kelowna 5 years ago and killed him along with two seniors going the other direction. Driver was the sole survivor..... go figure.

Like I said. I have no sympathy for stupid people. If you don’t like the distracted driving law, just ignore it and drive distracted. Just don’t whine when you get a ticket. I usually drive 10 over most places. The few times over nearly 40 years of driving that I got a ticket, I took my punishment like a man and paid the ticket. I wasn’t a Whiney little b!tch about it. If you drive distracted and get a ticket, be a man about it and take your punishment.

LOL, i must have missed the part where me or anyone else was whining. I see a discussion about the validity and the effectiveness of new laws and initiatives , and a lot of varying opinions on existing and proposed laws. I am certainly not gonna get in a discussion about how many tickets i have personally got or whether i was happy about them. Some i deserved , some in my opinion, i didn't. This wasn't about that. So you continue to "be a man " and take your punishment , like everyone else when they break the law and get caught. And good for you for not whining, sorry ran out of gold stars.

Having someone cross the center line oncoming at least once every week head down looking at phone gets old. If I had someone point a gun at me once a week I’d agree with all the snowflakes that marched on Washington.
