I’d encourage everyone to take 5 mins to read this article, or at the very minimum read below. My hope is the federal government could commit larger spill equipment and guarantee funds in the event of a spill.

-Likelihood of coastal spill will go up no matter what is done (5 tankers now vs 30 later). Statistically expect 1 spill every 473 years, so a 10% chance of a spill in the 50 yr life of the project
-Likelihood of an inland spill will decrease due to reducing rail shipping traffic
-Diluted bitumen actually floats based on numerous tests in salt water, thus same oil spill equipment can be used, however time is of the essence
-Dilbit is not more prone to spills over light oil
-Tankers are not dangerous to whales
-Kinder Morgan has no obligation to clean a spill after it leaves the port. If a spill occurred BC would chase compensation from KM and the ship company, they would get $1.3Billion max
-Vancouver is best port for oil exportation as has the best spill equipment with shortest response time, however it’s equipment can not handle more than about 10% of volume of the tanker
-2 worst marine spills were from the BC government ferry and a grain shipper
