just an FYI, they can ticket you for any infractions within 500 meters of a train crossing. Seen them sitting at the crossing on 215st pulling people over and did not know why. Thought they just sat and watched for crossing infractions but I guess nothing better to do that give out chicken **** tickets

Distracted driving and seatbelt are their favourite . Maybe they should pay more attention to their ****ty container delivery drivers who can't handle their rigs

They are only allowed to ticket in regards to protection of their employees/property, so a lot of interpretation there. I highly doubt things like a seatbelt ticket would stick. If those fawks ever pulled me over they'd be getting a earful about how they should police their employees on the laws of how long they are able to block the tracks. Could ticket a train pretty much every single day at 215st crossing.

Who keeps the money?

I can just see other companies like Shell or CNRL having their own cops.

CP have their own cops?

Yes CP does. It’s only the railways. They have incredible power. They don’t even require permits for buildings etc, they can do whatever they want.

Jeez. Only time I remember hearing about the railway police was an old 1940's noir movie where the hobos ridin' the rails were hassled by the railway dicks.

Well I guess now we know where the guys who are rejected by the RCMP, City Police Departments, Sherriff's office and Bylaws wind up.

500m is a long ways away from the line. A little over 1/4 mile. So it also include a road that runs along a track.

They are not limited to 500m .

The CN Police federal oath of office primarily directs their duties 'on and along' CN infrastructure, protecting properties owned and administered by CN. CN Police have additional provincial appointments which allow them to extend provincial enforcement such as the Highway Traffic Act outside the boundaries set under the Railway Safety Act of Canada.

I didn't know about the powers they have until I got on a few jobs doing drailment cleanups. you can haul any piece of equipment without permits or pilot cars to a derailment, for as many hours as you need to do it. they call it a 'public welfare emergency" just like forest fire work. they have their own police force, judges, courts etc. they trump all local or municipal laws and police on and near their property. because they were here first

Everything they do from coast to coast is covered under the railway act. Provinces and local municipalities have no authority on the railway rights of way. This is to prevent the railways from having to meet and obey a myriad of laws across the country. Even emergency responders have no authority on railway property. We had a locomotive catch fire in calgary and we couldn’t enter railway property to put it out. We stood and watched it burn for several hours until all the lube oil and fuel was consumed. The residents downwind were none too happy.

Sounds like the railways ARE the dicks and send out mini dicks to enforce their will :) Like any large corporation, they do a lot of silly things and can behave in a bad manner. It all comes back to the individual(s) involved in a given situation. Most are competent and have reasonable intentions. A few though....

It makes absolute sense that they would have the same rules apply to their right of way and property as they pass through so many jurisdictions and every one of those would like a different rule.

I imagine the railway police have to go through training similar to other law enforcement agencies and are not likely too interested in things that don't affect railway safety or operations.
