Could this be the beginning of a meaningful discussion on assault weapons in the USA?

Saw Stephen Colbert last night. The youth of the USA appear to be truly motivated to get something happening. The response from the Republican party officials truly are ridiculous (we need teachers to be armed too). Certainly amusing watching people who are at the bottom of a pit pick up an axe and start digging :)

Arming teachers probably not a great idea, but armed security in all schools might be what it takes to end this crap.

They need to do something. They had a armed officer at the school on the last one but he didn't do the job he was there to do. I think they need armed guards but like three of them and not a single one. Also need to get the illegal guns off the street. Taking guns away from the legal owners will make it worse. I don't have a real cure for them.

It sure won't be an easy fix when you have a strong contingent that believes the right to own a weapon is completely independent of whether you pass a proper background check.

That's just as bad in my opinion.

They need a system to change their culture

Long term sure. That will never happen overnight though. Security can happen now. Terrorists flew 2 planes into the world trade center, no one tried to ban planes. Severely tightened up security at airports and it didn't happen again. They've already proved it works.

Exactly. They just need the TSA at every school, mall, and public place to body scan and grope you before to do can anything... Sounds lovely to me.

Not really. My wife took a hunting pack on a flight and didn't check the pockets. Went through security with two 30-06 rounds in one of the pockets. Airport security is only as good as the person doing the job. I've had them take my potatoe chips while my brother has a bag of pot in his carry on.

I wouldn't send my kids to a school with armed guards.

The guns aren’t going away in the states. There’s too many out there. If you think any firearms ban or gun control is gonna stop these things from happening you’re a misguided fool.
You cant legislate sanity, morality or common sense. It’s already illegal to kill someone. Do people honestly think that if there’s a firearms ban the crazies are gonna not kill someone because the rifle they have is illegal? Are people really that stupid?
Its no accident that these nut bars are walking into schools to do their worst. They know that schools are gun free zones, and that there is nearly a 100% likelihood that they will be the only person there with a gun for at least 6 to 10 minutes.
These crazies don’t try to shoot up a gun store, or a shopping centre, or a bus station, or airport, because they know that there will be people there that are armed and will return fire on them. They’re cowards as well as crazy. They go where they know there will be little resistance.
All the whiners out there better realize the facts. The guns aren’t gonna be banned or controlled. Hasn’t happened yet, and won’t happen in the future either. Schools will continue to be targeted by the insane until they are protected as well or better than any other public place. Until police, armed security or properly trained and armed civilians are in place to protect the schools, these things will continue to happen.
Why is it that all the liberals and other whiny left have no problem protecting things like banks etc, but think properly protecting their children at school is a bad idea? No cure for stupid I guess.

The kid that did the shooting passed the background check and bought the rifle legally.

Whole heartedly agree. But looking at the kid I wouldn’t have sold it to him. He has that look. Do the gun shops have the “we reserve the right to refuse service to anybody”? I realize as a business owner money is money. I’d probably go out of business within a week. Lol. That’s not to say owners could catch them all. But most of the shooters have that 1000 yard seen some **** look. When in reality they are just old fashioned crazy.

The background checks depend entirely on the data provided by the various States (eg Felony convictions, mental health issues etc) Some States are so wrapped up in Privacy B.S. that at best very little information is input. The CEO of the NRA yesterday pointed out that 80,000 convicted felons attempted to purchase firearms. Only 44 were prosecuted. There is one very big problem right there.

I really doubt it. Suppose some folks might though.

Lol,,,

Yes it will be interesting to see what happens.

It seems anything can be a weapon. Plane, car, gun, knife. It’s the person who does the act that is the concern.

But it could be anyone.

True. Could get struck by lighting too I guess, but it is not something that I lose any sleep over though.
