After record-breaking 2017, this year gets off to a hot start
Stop us if you’ve heard this before – Canada had a record-breaking month for car sales.Despite predicting a down market for the year, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants reported that new light vehicle sales in Canada went the opposite way than expected as numbers hit all-time record highs for the month of January.In all, 117,300 vehicles were sold last month. That’s up almost 6 per cent from the same period last year.As has been the trend recently, light trucks were all the rage as they accounted for about 73 per cent of the market. Sales overall in this segment were up 9 per cent while passenger cars fell 2.5 per cent, DesRosiers said.The consulting firm cautioned, however, the strong start doesn’t necessarily foretell positive news for the rest of the year.“There are as many positive variables as negative variables affecting vehicle sales right now so it is hard to predict where the market will be in 2018,” the company said. “The safest bet would be a minor correction although it wouldn’t surprise us if we end up with another record year in 2018.”The Detroit automakers were the top sellers in January. Fiat Chrysler led the way with 17,761 new vehicles sold. General Motors was second at 16,791, followed by Ford at 16,461.Last year, more than two million new vehicles were sold, an all-time record.In the U.S., sales were up 1 per cent as 1.15 million vehicles were sold, according to Autodata Corp. Passenger car sales fell almost 11 per cent while light truck sales were up 8 per cent.
