I do prefer HD over Lowes, but you need to know your pricing and the difference in products that they both carry
I bought all the lumber and stuff for the deck on the house from Lowe's a few years ago. It was a good price but I had a horrific experience with getting the order. The manager of the west end store did step up to try to make it right with a $200 gift card. I've been back there since but it's not my first choice

I priced out counter tops both were similar ...it was actually cheaper at lowes but after install, the price was more for the final bill and the warranty wasn't as good for stains ect...

I prefer Lowes. Some regular prices at Home Depot are cheaper, but contractor card takes 5% off everything at Lowe's which makes most equal, whereas at Home Depot it's pretty much useless. Plus Lowes has had 15% off a lot lately. I probably go there too much, they know me by name at the west end store :d I don't want to know how much I spend there. It helps to that I randomly get spend $500 get $100 off cards.

Both Home Depot and Lowe's are owned by American companies. I will go to Home Hardware or Canadian Tire first as these are locally owned.

If they do not have stock I am looking for, will go to HD or Lowe's and from there it is quality and price that drives my purchase

I go to Canadian Tire lots for tools etc, but most stuff I go to Lowe's for, Canadian Tire doesn't sell. I am actually really impressed with the quality of Mastercraft tools. I've bought 2 roofing nailers now, and at $100 they last for years. Last much longer then my $350 Bositech one. A thing I buy a lot of from Lowes for example is Delta membrane, no choice to go anywhere else, or lumber insulation, etc. There is virtually no Home Hardware's around unfortunately, so unless I happen to see one when I need something, I don't even bother. It sucks, but bad decisions by Rona caused it to get bought out. For example I use to always go to the old west end store, when they moved into that new little chitty store they lost SO much business.

Went and checked it out this afternoon. Just another Home Depot with blue paint instead of orange. I can't believe they built it so close
