Who all is running a deleted rig?
Pros/cons?

pro's, no DEF, no emissions related check engine lights, usually more power and slightly better fuel economy

con's, possibly void warranty, usually much loader exhaust, problems with resale, problems trading in, and possible CVSE problems are you are braking the law by doing a delete.

Right now both of my trucks are under warranty and I wont screw with the emissions while there is still warranty. After the warranty if gone then I have a decision to make. The newer DEF systems are getting better and better and the problems less and less.

Some enterprising soles deliver that DEF to your door cheaper than it is at the pumps.

Do you run your trucks off warranty for long or trade them in on new ones promptly?

Yep definitely true that deleted trucks sell worse/for less. Was at last weeks chiliwack rb auction, deleted trucks were selling for up to 10k less vs. comparable "stock" trucks (these were kenworth T 800 tri drive logging units).

it really depends on the truck, have gone both ways, if its been a good truck and well maintained, no problems, I like to run a year past warranty.

You seen that too, I felt that auction went crazy high on the prices....miss the 72chevy, went way to high but snagged the Jeep for a good price I thought. Lost of tired iron there.

Were you there in person? If yes I was standing a few people over when you bought it lol. Ya think you got the jeep for a pretty good price. Yep tons of beat up equipment that sold for way too much. Was interested in the komatsu blade runner 150 that had issues, went for 25k more than I would a spent on it. Ended up settling for a skidsteer (jcb),trailer, and a few odds and ends.

Ya think we did ok that day... yep pretty well all the excavator's went for over market value. Except the 750, think it went for 145k if memory serves lol. But nobody needs a 70+ ton unit. The Volvo 350 was very nice, don't know what it went for tho.

They're less value on trade and most dealers won't take them . Cost is about 10 G less at auction if they've been deleted and delete costs about 8 g . If they are working ok as is I wouldn't mess with them

The industry is controlled by the large forest license holders and they set the rates for the contractors. The risk and reward tends to lay with the corporations in this business. TLA is more representative of the coast where it is a much different industry than the interior and they have sort of become whiners. Efficient contractors are profitable but there are lot in the business with very poor management skills.

I guess hey.
If they didn't think they were getting a good deal on trucking and other services they would just buy their own.
Must pencil out cheaper to hire it out.
Less risk too I imagine.

It really depends on the region, the mill and how sharp of a pencil the controller has. Many mills are making record profits right now, but some want to recoup what they may have lost in previous years before sharing the wealth. Some mills are down right ruthless with their cuts to contractors. Many times they know when a contractor is in over his head and they know they have to work or go broke so they jab a bit harder.

Then there are decent mills to work for who understand the value of a loyal and skilled contractor pool and they work to make sure they are profitable and happy. I have talked to guys in the south eastern part of the province who are making as much as 25% less than we are in this region. You might ask why they dont go where the money is, but we have to remember most guys are working in their home towns and dont want to just up and move, plus the ability to take your employees with you is risky.

Lots of company owned/run logging and road building outfits on the coast but very rare in the interior. Generally cheaper and less headaches to contract it out due to union labour costs and restrictions as well as keeping capital free for mill improvements acquisitions vs. equipment purchase.

This is so true, the grass may look greener on the other side but you still need to mow it. Cost of leaving home with crew go crazy. It’s best to stay home and stand your ground. We are squeezed down here in the south, as pointed out in an earlier post you need to sharpen your pencil and pay attention. Mills love to see you behind the eight ball, this is where they can leverage you. In fact I’m seeing top brass visiting my sites offering financial help...free money I think not. Just Another way to own you. People are so hard to find, my reply to offers like this are I’ll buy the equipment you find me a crew.
I like being in control of who and how much I owe, if it’s no profitable and stops being fun then I go home. They don’t like that, they want you to work work work....cheep. So how can I help you lol.
im doing just fine thanks.

Frankly a contractor is only as good as his employees, when they forget that its a slippery slope. An idle machine makes no money, a machine being run by a moron loses you money.

Well the big companies cannot seem to figure out that simple concept stompin tom, in their mind all employees are all the same and actually cater to those that do nothing but bitch. You can't do nothing wrong if you do nothing at all....a valued employee.

So true, always appreciate good help and it’s rewarded. Slackers and poor additudes are like death by a thousand cuts. Still think it easier to park it then have damage and injury.
Good employees that contribute to positive fun work site then becomes a productive work site.
