On a snow bike I am lookin at wrapping the exhaust pipe with that asbestos tape ( not sure of name for it) to prevent melting my pants and some of plastics. What do you guys recommend? Pros and cons? Advice?

To get a tighter wrap wet it before you put it on then fire up the bike and let the heat dry it out. It will pull it nice and tight and look cleaner. DEI also sells a spray to waterproof it after so you get less rust under the wrap.

Yeah I'm running that same dei tape and spray on my exhaust pipe of my sled and its worked well. Really keeps the heat out from under the hood. I think you might end up redoing it periodically if it rubs up against trees or other debris though.

It doesn't change the performance of the motor in a detrimental way? Do you hose clamp the ends or tie with stainless steel wire?

Mines only wrapped after my turbo, so it doesn't hold heat in on the tuned portion of the pipe. I believe I used the little stainless straps that came with the kit, similar to a hose clamp but looks better. But personally I would think it would make performance of a snowbike better, it's going to keep the heat in the pipe and run similar to like it would in the summer, instead of constantly being cooled with snow.

I'm thinking the same thing, it should be better for the bike but not a mod guy so don't know the fine details of what it would do the combustion of motor.

Just for reference here are pics of a header I wrapped with the DEI grey colour stuff, wetted first and stretched on. One photo before and one after painting with their waterproofing black silicone paint

Yes that's the unequal length header currently on my STI. It's held up pretty well over 4 years although it's pretty well protected under the skidplate and the car doesnt' get a lot of miles. I have another equal length header wrapped in the DEI "titanium" light tan coloured wrap but haven't used it yet so can't comment on the durability.

Where did you get your DEI? Thanks for pics. So it's better to stretch it while wrapping?

Got it at Mopac in the west end. "Stretch" is a bit misleading I just mean keep it tight as you wrap it, pretty straightforward once you start. Soaking it first in water allows you to get a tighter and better wrap. The DEI metal tie wraps are expensive and work OK but some people use hose clamps to secure it better.

I haven't had much luck with the metal ties. I usually use hose clamps or baling wire.

Is there more than one width and which is best to work with?

Multiple widths are available. The wide stuff is good for straight sections but the narrow works better for bends like a sled pipe.
