I live in Alberta at the moment. When it comes to wills and estate kind of planning are you allowed to write your own here? Is it really a good idea to write your own or should you go to a lawyer?

There are kits you can buy to do them up yourself but it would be a good idea to have a lawyer to look at it. One less thing to bother the survivors at a bad time if all the i's are dotted and t's crossed.

I bought the staples kit (that said im a single young female in a fairly good financial position), and have had it witnessed by two different people. That means initial every page of the document etc. My mom is a secretary at a law firm and found that was essentially all that was required. Important part is getting a copy of it to close kin (my parents for me) and in a safe place for yourself. You can keep it pretty simple.

My parents found an online site that was much more thorough I believe. Paid for the forms, filled em out. At the time my mom didnt work for the law firm but the neighbour did, and she brought it in and had it checked over. They said it was the best 'non-lawyer draft' theyd ever seen and that it was great. They had every page witnessed/initialled, and copies are amongst some family members and in a safe place for the rest of us.

Something else to consider is the paperwork for if you end up in hospital unable to make your own decisions (i forget what its called sorry). As to being on life support at all, for how long, or at the families discretion. Organ donating or not. Cremation or full body casket. That sort of thing.

Your right its an unfortunate topic but you need to be prepared bc you dont want to hang your loved ones out to dry.

The one that states who is to make decisions if you are in the hospital and unable to make your own decision is a health care directive.
