Hi there :d

I am new to Snow and Mud

I currently live on Vancouver Island with my husband and two children. We like to camp, quad, hunt, fish and just be outdoors I guess you could say and are looking to purchase a huge chunk of land in Northern BC for those reasons

The place we've been looking at is off the grid and we are having a bit of a time trying to find house insurance because heating is by propane &/or wood furnace/fireplace insert. If anyone has any insight regarding insuring off the grid homes I would really appreciate your suggestions, ideas, etc.

Welcome to Snow and Mud L'artist! There's a few members here who live or have lived off the grid. Momma is one of the most recent to have tried her hand at it. If she doesn't chime in here, you may want to try sending her a private message. She's really great and always eager to help out a fellow Snow and Mudder.

Thanks for the welcome whoDEANie :D We are having some frustration over getting home insurance. One company wants us to get rid of the propane heat (the fridge, dryer & stove also run off of propane (& electricity). The home is receiving constant power via 12 volt batteries and industrial generator. I don't see the big deal about having propane.. it is a form of gas just as "naural gas" is, isn't it? Geesh

I can't speak for the insurance company, but it may have something to do with the fact that propane doesn't dissipate the way natural gas does. It has a tendency to stratify in low spots, probably your basement if you have one.

:welcome: to the site.

Sorry I can't help you with "living off the grid". I doo burn wood for a primary heat source and have not had trouble with insurance. I am required to have a building inspector inspect the system every 5 years which hasn't been an issue.
