I'm 13 almost 14 and I'm looking to get a new bike. I'm 5'7" and about 130 lbs. I'm coming off of a kx 100 And I'm pretty experienced and been riding about 7 or 8 years. I usually go trail or swamp riding but I go out to the track once and a while. I don't know whether to go with a 2 stroke or 4 stroke. I've been looking at kx 250 2 strokes but I don't know if that would be too big? Are there any other suggestions?

My son will be 13 in July and is 5' 8" and 140lbs. He also has been riding for 7 years and is currently on a yz 250f. He also rides my KTM 250sx 2-stroker as well with absolutely no problem. It boils down to experience. My son races competitively. Cross country and motocross.

When I went from a 125 to 250 I was surprised at how much easier the 250 was to ride. Much nicer powerband. Very forgiving. And both bikes are basically exact same size and wieght if I remember correctly. The 250 four stroke would probably be a great bike too for someone your age and size too, but I dont think you could go wrong with the 250 2 stroke if you are an experienced rider.

You should be fine with the experience. I was about your size at that age and I went from a kx80 to a KTM 250 when I was 14. The transition was fine for me. At the time, the bike was phyiscally a little big but you get used to it and learn to adapt. Like deaner says, the 250 is surprisingly quite forgiving. The bike only makes power for how much you wanna twist the throttle. I rode the KTM for years and then tried a 450 4 stroke. The torque is unreal but personally; it wasnt nearly as much fun as the 2 stroke. I say keep the smoker and get yourself a 250.
