Just recently my wife was riding my 04 800 Summit and for some reason the right cylinder dried up. Unfortunatly due to her inexperience she didn`t stop right away and a piece of piston skirt dropped into the crank, cracking the crankcase. As a result I put in a new crate engine with 1yr. warranty. 3000kms. on the sled. My question is if the 800HO has an underlying problem?

I know of another REV 800HO that granaded. The owner has been sledding and wrenching on his sled for 30 years, he didn't think that much of it. His opinion is a 2 stroke engine is a pretty simple light engine that you ask a lot out of. Occasstionally you get un-lucky and one packs up. I know a lot of people that ride REVs and I think they are just as reliable as any other brand. Nothing special that you should worry about.

In your case it could have been a fault with the oil injection or a carb running way to lean. Some times a power valve can get stuck too (usually by running someone elses oil, ski-doo has special additives in there injection oil to prevent the power valve from sticking). I don't know if a stuck power valve would cause a piston to burn out. Also, if it was the PTO side the seal under the clutch could have been damaged. It it leaks it sucks air and makes the engine run way to lean on that side.

2004 summit

I know a guy who's motor went two weeks ago in Revy. He is the original orner of the 2004 sled. Not sure of the damage yet. There have been rumors about the 04 crank bearings failing.
Stifler, doesn't sound like your alone.

Re: Dried Up Cylinder

DID THE DEALER TAKE THE OLD ENGINE APART AND ACTUALLY CHECK OUT THE CRANKSHAFT SEALS?? I AGREE WITH SUMMIT2003:agree: THAT A BAD MAGNETO SIDE(RIGHT SIDE) SEAL LIKELY POPPED OUT OF PLACE, OR THE SPRING RETAINER INSIDE THE SEAL LET GO, AND THIS WOULD SUDDENLY LEAN OUT THE CYLINDER AND OF COURSE "GRENADE THE ENGINE" IF NOT CAUGHT IN TIME. EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR. SOME OLDER 800'S AND ESPECIALLY 600'S HAD RING PROBLEMS, BUT USUALLY SHOWS UP AS POOR COMPRESSION, AND DROP IN POWER AND HARD STARTING. OTHERWISE, SUSPECT A SEAL PROBLEM. JUST MY :twocents: WORTH. SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR BAD LUCK:( .

Thanks for the replies fellows. Crank seal was ok. Funny story with this though, when my dealer dropped the new engine in it went for about 3miles and the engine screached with a ring stuck. So then it got 2 new pistons and a cylinder. (BRP`s coin). I have 250miles on it now and is performing good. I have rode for alot of years with minor trouble, guess it was my turn.
Later guys
PS I enjoy this site, good friendly banter

I would say that there are no problems with the engine in general. I agree with the seals leaking-But seeing as how the engine is 3 yrs old(even with low km)if not used regulary-seals dry up. Also MAKE sure you use storage oil for the last time you here the engine run till snow flys-bearings will rust pit from condensation from summer and gernade when the rust spot turns into a hot spot on the bearing. Also a common problem alwasys over looked.... When the sled goes on its roof---SHUT it off real fast. Not to try and get bragging rights to say "my sled ran longer than urs updide down." Wheres the oil pick up..?.. bottom of oil tank-so do the math and add gravity to the picture and it would look like a big air bubble in the oil line. Me personally, I would hold the oil pump lever full bore(or just pull out the oil cable at the adjuster) for awhile to see when/if the bubble goes through-plus I do that on my first start of the season also-plugs arnt as expensive as an engine.
