Finally took the plunge into the sledding world - sold the street bike (wife was happy) and bought a sled (then not so happy). I scooped up a new 2016 Summit SP 163" from Turple Bros.

My close friends don't 'do' motorsports activities unfortunately, so I'm looking for opportunities to get out and experience some different riding areas with some new folks. In the past I've been to the Fernie (Morrisey, Pipeline, Wranglers Cabin, up to the Notch) in early 2017 and the Atlas area outside of Blairmore in 2004. I'm interested in giving the Golden area a go - I've heard good things about some of the zones in that part of BC. If anyone wants to give the Fernie area a try I spent 3 days there in late February and I cannot wait to go back. I would still classify myself as a beginner/intermediate rider, but with 5 years of ATV and 10 years of sport bike experience - I'm confident on the machine when terrain isn't too crazy, and I'm not afraid to ham the throttle from time to time:cool:.

I've got all the gear (beacons shovel etc etc), just looking for an excuse to take a weekday off - also I have a sled trailer so if anyone is without transportation I can provide a spot on the trailer for some gas money

I finished the classroom portion of the Zacs Tracs AST1 in Okotoks last weekend - along with the Rescuer Workshop they put on after the class. All in all it was a 14 hour day but it was worth it. Field class is booked for Jan 14 in Fernie - I want to get out a few times before then and do some practicing with digging pits and play hide-and-seek with transceivers :p

I've got a question about license plates. Show of hands, who puts their plate on their sled at all? I've been told that the tail fender can sometimes get caught up in the track and can cause damage to a license plate. Not sure if the trail police would be sticky about having the plate in a bag, or do it like boat operators where the license plate # is a vinyl decal (somewhere on the side of the tunnel??). Nobody likes being ticketed or standing in line at the DMV to get a replacement plate... Any suggestions?

I always had mine under the seat. Never was an issue. It not saying that it wouldn't be if I got stopped.

Here is a good read for you: https://www.snowandmud.com/ski-doo-...mounting-ers.html?highlight=sled+registration

Myself, I didn't believe the haters or whatever you want to call them, I mounted mine on the tail flap with bolts and experienced no problems. This year will be the same only I will use zip ties as I have a removeable tail flap that will be stored on the tunnel and I am afraid (even before I have it mounted) that the bolts would scratch the tunnel. I know some carry it in a back pack, some in a storage bag, others under the seat, etc.. Read the posts in the link and make a decision.

I mounted mine on the seat bracket with zip ties. Most polaris owners do mount it the same way

Two morons were seen by conservation officers riding sleds in a caribou closer two years ago. In spite of being photographed by the officers they couldn’t identify them as there were no visible plates. Since then Conservation officers have been warning sledders who do not display their plates properly in both the Boulder and Frisbee parking lots (Revy). Which the officer advised me is what is appropriate in the state or province the vehicle is registered in. Alberta sleds must have the original plate on the back of the sled. BC on the other hand can be on the side or the back and they may also display a sticker replicating the original plate as well.
I queried as to why BC registered vehicles were allow the sticker and not Alberta and the officer. told me that the snowmobiling/ATV community in BC had successfully petitioned the province for the relaxation allowing the sticker but no such changes were allowed in Alberta.
I don’t know of any fines being given out but assume that at some point the education stage will be over and the enforcement stage will begin. That is unless they lose interest and move on to bigger and better things which is anybody’s guess.
