Yes I just read that hunting season on sand hill cranes is open again in Alberta. Imagine shooting one and discovering it has a prosthetic leg .

much meat on a sandhill crane?

About $100 worth according to neilsleder, but a crow might have as much.
And that is the first sandhill crane I ever saw with a round bill.

Paying for the prosthetic lol. They are a big bird supposed to be really good eating. Always see them north of the Vega Sandhills, they’re always flying real high! Need a rifle to shoot them as a shot gun would never reach

They have a huge wingspan but are skinny .
Shot one when I was a kid, did not think they had more than a big mallard but that was a very long time ago.
Usually have one pair stop by every spring for 2-3 weeks cackling in field.
No idea what that is about, don't think they nest in area.

There is an old recipe kicking around for Sandhill cranes.

Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Clean the bird and add salt and pepper. A touch of garlic could be in order if so desired. Lay the bird on a cedar shake and bake for 4 hours. Throw the bird away and eat the cedar shake!!

According to my native friends, they taste like hell. Mostly, they eat frogs and bugs through the summer and then eat some grain for the trip south.

Kinda like the recipe for Canada goose.
Boil goose with old leather shoe. Once goose is cooked, throw it out and eat the shoe.

I have had goose jerky and it was great. I suppose most meats will taste good when it is salty. Lol
