Just want some thing to keep aggressive animals away while in the backcountry. I am 55 last had a licence in an when 17

Take the course or challenge the exam. I suggest getting your rpal. You may not want or need it now but might as well just jump through the hoops once. I good defender shotgun or like PFI said a high powered lever action like .444 or 45-70 will do the job.

You can no longer challenge the PAL exam, they took that away about a year ago I believe, everyone now has to do the course.

Yes do your unrestricted and restricted the same weekend. Alot of the restricted questions mirror the unrestricted ones on the exam. Do it while it is fresh in your mind. A .50 cal sniper rifle will handle any aggressive animals and you can shoot them on your neighbors property so he has to dispose of the carcass. Lol.

I think I'll take a shot gun or 45-70 over a can of bear spray. Spray and rifle if in heavy bear territory would be smart

I love my guns but spray is best if a bear is after you. I'm a decent shot but wouldn't want to have to shoot a bear off someone or something

I agree with that. Also when you are being charged by the bear and trying to shoot it and drop it in one shot is hard to do. Spray is the best. For gun question I would take a short 12g with slugs.

Not able to find the Web page.
2008 to 2016 involves 8 Hunters mulled by Bears, and 2 persons fatally by Wolves. Both up in Northern Manitoba if I recall. More wrong then right.
Bear spray injury "attempt" miss hap is the 1 from this year as she fumbled the can.
Other then that, bear spray works well, fast and easy to get at as the larger cans send out the wide berth mist incase you get into panic mode.
Wise to practic a few times from the holster.
Pick what works as a firearm will work too.
If Bears or other furry critters encounter humans and spray, they will avoid humans as much as possible from that day on.
Critters seem to remember the un-welcome encounters, not always, but in most cases from that day forth.
Pal Don PS: I have both, spray is always the first defence to critters.
Kow Moose get many humans if I recall, the Web has many bad stories of folks getting taken down by sharp front hoffed beasts.

Stephen herrero bear attacks: their causes and avoidances... Great book, has had more bear encounters then anyone and at the end of the book he speaks highly of bear spray, spoiler alert.

Valid PAL, (federal document). I guide and always carry spray. I've only had to shoot two wounded bears over the years, my preference is a defender shotgun with sabot slug. But last resort you'll always go for spray. I always tell my hunters, bring a very sharp knife.Not to defend yourself but to finish yourself off before it gets ugly.

I sprayed a bear that was trying to join me in a tree stand. (from about 3 feet) It jumped off the tree and ran away. Less than half an hour later it was back! They are very curious. It did not climb up to the stand again!
