Riding buddy and I just picked up rino 650's, I'm wondering what the best option is for map upgrades. I've read through all the threads here but they are 2+years old so I'm looking for some up to date opinions.

Is the Garmin Canada topo worth the $90 to have all of Canada?

We ride mainly in BC so would forking out the $150 for the BC backroads be a better opinion?

Ive read a little about the Ibycus and the price is very attractive but that's about all I understand so far.

I downloaded the alberta / bc backroads map from the internet and put it on a micro SD card. Saved myself 200$. It's the best map I've found out there.. Shows altitude better, labels creeks and staging areas

Did you get it off of a torrent site? Do you have a link for the download?

I loaded the Topo Canada and purchase the Alberta / BC back roads micro sd on one card.

Highly recommend. Works great also.

Picked up the BC/AB chip from Cabellas - $280.00
Best map program for detail but pricy

I also have used Oziexplorer, Etopo Canada and now Backcountry

I could not be bother to play around finding half assed maps

Ya I did a bit of searching trying to find a torrent of the backroads map but all the links I found were a virus or dead links.

I don't know if the AB backroads map would be worth it for me right now, I know you save $50 buying both but I don't see Ab being much use as I don't have a quad or dirtbike. And for what I use a gps for in Ab my iPhone is good enough for me.

Do you need the topo Canada to run the backroads map or can they be used seperatly?

Etopo and BackCountry are the same program - different manufactures - they work separately

With the BC Chip you just open the back of the GPS and insert the chip - easy

For computers you can use - Garmin MapSource or Base Camp - both the same and upload/download through USB to the GPSs

READ the manuals first - they are like cell phone the more you learn where the menus are the faster you can set up / upload/download tracks

Learn how to quickly mark a Waypoint and where to find Waypoints and tracks...
IE ALWAYS
-waypoint your truck/staging area
-SAVE / Clear your track history before heading out.
- set the track point setting to the distance you are riding -- max 5000 points but saves to 500 points per saved track
- set track points to stop at max and NOT to delete start points when full - that erases the points where you came from so then you can not find your way back.....
- Practice when you go for a drive some where -drop Waypoints - then try to download to your computer - see where you were -- where the waypoints are.
- Learn the best tool of the Rino - Buddy waypoints!!!! - how to set up/turn on your Polling settings - Poll to drop a waypoint on your buddies GPS
Then try to find him.... If biking or sledding a buddy disappears fast, you need to know how to poll them and get their location fast. Fantastic tool...

Can run separately

Hi just installed a BRP/Garmin Montana GPS on my sled. I loaded the BRP supplied Canada TOPO which is ok but I am looking to enhance this program. I am wondering if you know if Cabellas chip would be compatible with my set up. If you have any other GPS tips I would appreciate any advise you might have. I am on a steep leaning curve.

Any mapping software on a micro sd card will slip into your unit. The slot is under the battery.

Or you can download maps from the Garmin site to your unit. I like the cards personally.

Don't forget to hook your 650 up to the computer, go to the Garmin site and register it then check for software upgrade!

Got my rino updated and picked up the bc backroads map, everything works fine but I can't seem to get the map unlocked on my laptop. I've DL the free maps from the website along with the base camp program but I can't get the map unlocked on my laptop unless I have my rino hooked up via usb. I've got the unlock code and when the program asks for it I input it but nothing happens, It just stays locked. Now my understanding is I should be able to view the maps on my laptop with out the rino plugged in or the sd card in the laptop it self, correct? Or am I wrong?

Wrong.
The mapping is integral to the card in the GPS. If you save a map, route etc then it'll save the info as seen on your GPS.

If your exploring and looking on base camp you need either the GPS or sd card hooked to your computer as that's what hosts the software.
