any radio with FRS or GMRS channels will communicate with a rino. but only another rino will transmit gps information

buy a rino, if money is the rock in the road get a used one on ebay, u don't need the latest and greatest, a rino 120 works fine, no matter what others tell ya.

I'd say buy a Rino if you can but if you can't...
You should be able to use most other GRMS/FRS radios. There are charts online that will show the corresponding frequency/channels between different brands.
You can also look into buying a UHF/VHF radio like the Baofeng UV-5R and programming the frequency for the channel that your buddy is using on his Rino. Getting a lapel speaker mic with it is even better because you don't have to take off your helmet to talk or listen. I use a Rino 530HCX for GPS and locating friends and the UV-5R for communicating. The Rino is on the sled in a RAM holder where I can see it for navigation (kind of useless in a backpack) and the UV-5R is in my backpack with the speaker mic clipped to my chest. There are some legal issues with using a UHF/VHF radio regarding a HAM license. I will be looking into whether that applies to users that utilize repeaters and not just GRMS channels.
You can buy a speaker mic for the Rino but the one I could find is not as good as the UHF/VHF versions. Kind of flimsy with a cheap push to talk button that freezes up easily.

I have the rhino 650, my BCA BC link radios work with it as well as any of my other frs radios, for 2 way communication.

buy the rino, why not get all the features that two rinos provide, otherwise buy two cans and join them with a string.

We're using throat mics with our UV-5R's now. Wayyyyyy better than the lapel mic! Absolutely no background noise.

Is that mike compatible with the 650, or are there better ones out there. Also wanted to use it when riding the bikes.

Cool!!
So the mic goes around your neck, it has an ear piece and what so you do with the push to talk button?

Sometimes the interference from the engine can be annoying. Adjusting the squelch helped a bit.
I'll look into throat mics. My only concern is how uncomfortable an ear piece might be after a lengthy time.

Depends on the one you buy. I have one that just has a clip on it that can go pretty much anywhere. My newest one has velcro on it. Not sure where I'm gonna put it yet. Thought about the side of my helmet, but I just know I'll forget about it the first timed I take my helmet off.

I find it very comfortable in my ear. I really don't even notice it's there. The only comfort concern I've had was with one I bought that had larger mic pickups. I found it rubbed my throat sore after a full day. The smaller ones I have now don't have that issue. The larger one had better sound quality, but I payed a lot more money for it too.

For $100 you can get a 5W UHF/VHF radio off ebay. I have the Puxing 888k, radio range and clarity is easily as good as my buddies Rino 650. Obviously lacks the GPS and all that comes with that though.

Just used my UV5R's again last weekend. Used it to get out of the way of 3 logging trucks on the 34km drive into camp with the truck and trailer, then switched to GMRS frequencies to keep track of my buddies all weekend long on the quads. I love these radios! ;)

^^^ Yeah thats a great point. Most resource roads post the channel, easy to tune your radio to so you can actually travel safely. Hell, even throw it on LADD 1 when you are on the highway to hear why that H&R truck spun out on that hill, and how all these guys sitting waiting could have backed up it no problem lol... Free entertainment!
