I looked briefly at them. $150 seems high. Can you mark way points? back track? see maps? The cheaper Rhinos from Garmin can doo all that and have a built in radio. They also allow you to download the tracks to GoogleEarth.

Can get them for $105, $80 plus shipping online out of a calgary online site.

You can mark up to 5 points, Put 5 different symbols for each point. But it basically gives a direction and distance to that point. It will show altitude and temp, and it can track up to 48 hrs of travel.

Only thing is no map to look at. But with a etrex 20 you need to pay a yearly subscription to have the topo maps?

seems high in shipping, have them ship canada post, express. be there in a couple business days.

gps city is usually the cheapest for garmin products, and gps central is not to bad but usually more.

not sure about topo map updates, i have the disc from 05 and never seen any updates. and it was a one time purchase, unless you are getting an aftermarket product.

Sorry not as clear. $105 from cabelas, you can get them for $80 online plus shipping.

I did buy one today. Was going to get the etrex 20 with canada topo but everyones sold out and they are $250. Can get them for $200 online. But i also seen online costco you can get the oregon 450t for $240, may get one at a later date if i want the topo out on the mountain.

Basically this will mark the start point to a trip, a mid day meeting point and a few others. It wont show a trail but it shows a direction and distance, which will be great if i get lost.

The main thing i like about this is the batteries last along time cause its so basic and i can view my trail online on google earth. So at night in the hotel we can look up where we went and see where we can explore further the next day.

ah crap, gps city has the oregon 450 on sale right now for $199 and free shipping, i was looking at it myself, i like it better than the etrex, does take aa batteries, a charger can be purchased. or just buy a 40 pack of batteries. i bought the backroads map chip for my garmin rino. alberta is $135, bc is $135, or ab bc together is $245. think there is an update coming out sept 12 or so, it will be free if you purchase now. backroads as far as i can see provides way more detail than garmin canada topo, ibycus, or the others that i have seen. big help quadding in the bush because you know where the roads leases and pipeline row are.

I got the 75$ one... not cause im cheap because its all i really need... unless im wrong you cant see maps ects... you can mark 3 way points... it literally just points you back in the direction you came... i don't think its good for a long atv/snowmobile ride into the hills... best suited IMHOP for guys like me that enter the bush in various locations on foot and try to walk back out 4 or 5 hours later... i always know how far and where my truck is... to me a back tracker is like a digital compass with a memorary of where you started

Yah basically all i need too, have yet to get lost. We ride in big groups with radios but i have the ability to mark points now if i need to. I really like mine that it tracks you for google earth. Tried it biking today, works great. Cant wait to see were we go on the mountains. Ive looked on google earth and its all trees and lakes, this will work great.

i looked at the dvd, it is limited to only the one garmin gps that you register while the micro card can be used in any garmin that takes the memory card. not sure which is best, but i ordered the card, hope it works ok.

the only problem is if you can't backtrack and need to change your route, due to lakes swamps etc.

In my experience, it would be hard to get lost on an ATV because one is mostly on roads. Sledding is another kettle of fish. Lots of back-country, no trails and always the problem of an instant white out. For your situation it may be the ticket but for what I doo, it wouldn't be enough sometimes and that would be when the GPS would be a life saver or a "get me home back track" in the heavy fog or a snow storm.
