No license required. I had to upgrade from a 120 to a 250 channel. Lots more channels being used since the switch to RR frequencies on the BC side.

Technically you do require a license, but I have had radios for 30 plus years and have never been asked to show one.

You can get half decent import brand radios for pretty cheap now, it costs as much or more for installation and the antenna. Always a good idea to have one. If you dont know what to put in for channels, just buy one with as many as you can then have the shop install the most popular for your area, most cross over to other areas.

You only need a licence for your OWN frequency. you do NOT need a licence for any two-way radio used for radio controlled roads. I use a Kenwood TK-2212 handheld. It will transmit to 14kms and receive even further. Most comm stores will have maps and the frequencies being used for those areas. they charge me $45 to install two banks of 128 channels. you also need to carry with you a copy of the channels with you in your vehicle so you can cross reference the frequencies with the given name. For example a certain road may be using say "159.24" and your list may only call it the "ghost main". you can not program your own channels into a radio or at least legally.

Yes Mike the ONLY reason you would ever need your own licence is for "repeater" channels. these are private channels such as conoco or talisman or whom ever not public. log haulers and any other haulers are on public channels. All radio controlled roads use public channels unless you need a key to open the gates.

Good call on looking into radios. I drive logging truck in Golden and near misses happen more often than most people realize. Even when people call that people are on the road it's unsure where you will meet. With a radio call every 10 k until your getting close to someone then start arranging a meeting place. More often than not the truck will tell you where to meet them as they know the road. If they do LISTEN to them. Most trucks will slow so your not dusted in the summer if they know your there. Show the same respect back. As with everything you will run across a few that are dicks but that being said i've almost run over a couple tourists i would consider to be dicks. Impotant thing is that everyone goes home at the end of the day and like everything else communication will go a long way in letting that happen...

We carry the vhf licence I'm pretty sure you need it if you have Ladd channels in it or want to get the ladd channels installed think it's illegal if an installer gets caught installing ladd without a licence

I beg to differ

line 7 is plain as day, all users "must" have a license.

When I went to work as a contractor in the Alberta oilpatch, I was required to have a two-way radio. Purchased one, had the frequencies I needed programmed and headed on my way. No mention of licensing then (4 1/2 yrs ago) or now. I haven't looked into it, but it would seem the license is for the frequency, not the individual radio. I'm likely mistaken, but know of no individual in my area who has a license for his two way radio.

Well, out of all the people I know with 2-ways, Bigfoot is the only one I know with a license.

On a seperate note, letting my missus do the radio calls is always fun.
