Garmin 60CX Map Updates

I have had a 60CX for a few years now. I also purchased at the time the Canada Metroguide 4.0 and am using it mostly on the road. It is in need of some serious map updates, especially for Alberta to compensate for all the new roadways over the last few years. I have checked Garmin's website and it says I have all the latest updates. Any other suggestions, other than buying new software?

I found that type of gps sucks for travelling in a vehicle. Works great on the quad. The Nuvi is a much more detailed and accurate gps. Gpscity in Calgary had a bunch on sale under $200. Not sure if that helps or not.

Try Ibycus 3.2. It's topo map software but very detailed with city roads and highways. And you can download it for free.

I have a 60CS (older than the CSx), bought Metroguide v4.0 for route finding back when I purchased my gps. Since then Garmin has come out with Metroguide v5.0, an updated version. But if you live in Calgary Metroguide v5.0 will still be dated as roads are changing faster than the software.

Metroguide updates or releases a new version every couple years I believe. Garmin also has Navigator NT series of software used with Nuvi style gps. NT doesn't work with the 60 series gps. That said Metroguide has greater detail than NT. But NT updates quarterly I believe...but at a subscription cost.

Bottom line you will have to buy new software. Even if you owned a Nuvi, you'd still have to buy updates for it over time.

Personally I wish Garmin would release a gps with the data fields available from the 60 series gps. The Nuvi's are too basic and I like the data & info provided with the 60 series.

I use my 60Cx for both on the road and trail. You would think that if you had laid out about $100 for add-on software, you'd get lifetime free updates. The reason I have for needing road updates is the same as yours... the roads in AB are changing faster than the updates.
I have cracked the screen on my 60Cx, however it still works. If I needed to replace it in the near future, what do you guys recommend for a replacement for use on both the road and trail??

Look for a new Garmin 60 CSX, some current Topo Maps, They also work for the Highways. You are never going to get all the Back/ roads/ trails unless you travel them yourself and place them on your oun Maps. At some time and it is starting to happen, more and more users are sharing their trips with others. If you think $100.00 is a lot for Maping Software that you can share with someone else is alot of money, well I guess we have been spoild, as to date, the Canadian Garmin Software has had no lock codes on them or how many computers / GPS units that one can load them to. Some of the Comercial Mapping Software exceeds $5000.00 for one programm, a lot of Quad users spend thousands of dollars on modifications to their machines so that they can boast about that they can go deeper, drive faster, do a wheel walk ect, But want to know where on the net they can get some free MAPS. over.

Cheap (alternative): get a Garmin 60CSx and use 2 memory cards, one with topo maps & one with the latest Metroguide on it.

Newest: if you'd like the latest in handhelds then get a Garmin GPSMAP 62s or 62st (t for topo maps loaded oem).

I use my 60CS for both off road (via topo) and road navi (using Metroguide v5). Been thinking of updating and getting the 62s to replace my 60CS.

Agreed that one should get free updates considering the input cost for Metroguide. At least with the Nuvi's anyone getting a copy of Navigator NT gets a years worth of updates free. NT definitely updated more than Metroguide. Still Metroguide is more detailed.

Just checked the Garmin site and both the 60CSx and the new 62s & st are compatible with Navigator NT maps....so you could get a years worth of updates rather than a single version mapping like Metroguide.

For me, I'd have both map sets are run both at the same time like my Dad does with the Garmin I bought him a couple years back (an older gpsmap 478). It will hold & run multiple maps sets....makes finding almost anything a breeze.
