Something I have always wanted to own, but never have. I would like to be able to use the back roads maps to do some exploring in Alberta and BC. What should I be looking at?

Personally I have something like this; mine is just the previous model that doesn't have maps on the screen, but pairs with an iPhone and shows the maps on it. I use it primarily for its Satellite messaging capability and tracking ability. We use it mostly in the river boat so maps aren't crucial, pretty hard to go where there isn't water.

Otherwise Garmin units are pretty hard to go wrong with.

I really like the Garmin Montana I got from Ron H. Works well and is probably my favourite gps. Yes I have/had a few lol

In them hills.
If your using it in winter you may hate the Montana.

Something like the Garmin GPSMap64
As button that won't freeze like a touch screen and has the best antenna you can get.

I need a new gps as well. I am still researching models.

Handhelp to use hunting and sxs riding.

I have the inreach for emergencies and being able to text. It does have mapping.

I am looking at adding backroads mapping as well.

I was thinking of that.

I heard a rumour if you update it in Canada for maps etc it gets rid of the 5 watts.

That might be BS too.

Never had a problem with the touch screen on my sled. Amps mount wired to battery. It's always turned on when in the mount.

My keep the screen heated when it is plugged in. I know running them out of a pocket when it is cold the touch doesn't work **** hot.

So question for you.

Is that sled a e start or a pull start?

I have a pull start but have wanted to cradle mount my GPS like you have.

Problem I have heard is you need to be a 3000-4000 rpm in order to have enough juice to power the GPS.

Drop below that and it switches off.

I wonder if a guy is able to add a battery to a pull start sled and charge it for the purposes of running a GPS......??????

I'd never use my current cell phone out on the trail - too expensive, too easy to damage. I really like the Garmen 64's. They are completely water proof and very rugged. Even though you sacrifice screen size for the buttons, I find using the buttons way easier than the touch screens (except when typing in names for my waypoints).
