Hey guys, I'm looking to pick up 2-4 Baofeng (now rebranded as Pofung) radios. Has anyone bought recently and where did you buy from? I'm slightly hesitant to buy from some random overseas seller, but it could be worth it for the price and options. A few US sellers on Amazon, but they don't have as large of a selection to choose from.

Also, any recommendations on which model? I hear that the UV-B5 is better but it's harder to find. Otherwise I'm probably looking at the UV-5Ra. Has anyone used the clip on mics from Baofeng? Would ideally like to have the radio in my pack and the Mic on my shoulder strap to limit the electronics interfere with my beacon.

Cheers
Peter

A buddy is a bit of a radio nerd and he had a couple of issues with the Baofengs so recommended the Wouxon brand.

We run maybe 8-10 of the 5r with shoulder mics and longer antenna.
No problems at all.
For the money spent, can't be beat!

Just bought mine from Amazon.ca. Delivered within 5 days. Bought mic and longer antenna based on recommendations from others. Buy from a seller where Amazon packages and ships. Thanks to Turts for sharing his image file. Watch the youtube video on programming. Lots of good information. Make sure you save a copy of the original image file as different firmware versions can cause issues when you utilize others image files.

We've been using Baofeng UV5R's for a couple of years now and love them. Great little radio. i use a throat mic rather than the lapel mic and prefer it. Fair bit more money than a lapel mic but well worth it. Don't buy the cheap plastic throat mic though. Been there, done that, not worth it.

Also, here's a link to a pretty detailed manual for them. The one that comes with the radio sucks.

Our group of 5 all have boafeng radio now for 2 years and love them we have shoulder mics which work awesome and I recently bought the helmet mic kit so I can hear at all times and just put the ptt button on my Avy bag strap so it's easy to talk to someone
We also bought them from eBay and came from China for about 40 bucks!

I have 3 of the baofeng uv82hp. Apparently theses are better quality than the uv5r. I can get 15km range with mine with the longer antenna. For those putting theirs in their pack how are you keeping the ptt from getting keyed? I got mine from baofengtech.com, they will ship to Canada. Interested in how the helmet mike work, is the volume adjustable?

Does anyone know if the UV-5R can be programmed to pick up trucker's CB radio channel 19? If so what is the frequency? Thought it would be handy to monitor radio chatter and road reports going out to Revy. Thanks!

Most truckers use vhf radios on the LADD frequencies now.
LADD 1 seems the equivalent to ch 19.

Got my UV-5R just over a year ago. Use it for sledding and as a spare at work. Awesome little radio, never had any trouble. I bought it through a friend who got them, locally in Blairmore I believe, but I can find out for sure. He's used them for years in his construction business with no trouble. It came programmed with all the Ladd, common bush road, numerous police, FD and SAR, BC resource roads and BCA channels.....I think it was about $80. Looking at getting a throat mike for it rather than just an external.

Just ordered my UV-5R via banggood.com. We'll see how it goes. I looked to try baofengtech.com but you'd get raked over the coals on exchange rate right now.
