Just looking at getting a GPS for Dirtbiking and sledding in the winter. Stumbled across a good deal on the Oregon 200. I was wondering how the touch screens work with gloves, for dirtbiking it would be nice to not remove gloves to use. I also noticed it doesnt come with an internal battery, does it need a set of batteries every ride? In summer I go out west to waiprous and mclaen and in the winter ride revelstoke area. My other concern is the number of routes it stores (50 I believe), would you look for something with more routes and buttons rather than touchscreen?

Thanks,

I can't comment on the usability of the touch screen with gloves or covered in mud, but friends seem to have little issue. I've had several 60 series models and find them easier to navigate through the features and menus using the keypad.

As for the 50 route thing, you might be ok depending on how much time you want to spend messing around with it. Historically, I've loaded my GPS with all the trails and waypoints I've got. However, now that my library of tracks and waypoints is getting fairly large, the GPS takes forever to start up and it can be difficult to find what you are looking for if you need to flip through 100's of tracks or 1000's of waypoints to find what you are looking for. It seems the better practice is to just load onto your GPS what you need for the trip you are going on, in which case the 50 route limitation probably wouldn't ever affect you.

Is there a way to save your tracks or waypoints to your computer and move them back and forth? I would say that if I logged 15-20 on my dirtbike and about that on my sled ayear I could save them to my computer and clear the memory and if I want a specific track I could load it back onto the GPS otherwise keep only 10 or so tracks, or is it not quite that simple?

Yup, it's that simple as long as you don't forget. ...a regular problem for me.

I think most Garmin products come with Map Source which is a licensed product. I've had issues with upgrades and mult-computer use in the past. I've found that the free Garmin Basecamp is a great product, allows you to easily file your tracks and waypoints in folders, will allow you to overlay onto Google Earth, and is a pretty quick download/install from the Garmin website, and is easily upgradable.

I would get a 62 or 64 series over the Oregon 200. I have one and hated the touch screen on it. You have to have it pretty much dry and clean to get it to work and it won't work with gloves on. I sold mine and bought a garmin 62 series and it works great
