Hey Guys,

My 13 Ram 3500 diesel's computer is asking for new fuel filters every 15k Kms or so. Is this normal? What are your experiences like? Seems quick to me especially given the 400 dollar charge to do them. Has anyone tried doing both themselves or know of a place that will do them at a better price? Any specific filters out there that will last longer?

Just looking to see what others experiences are like.

Thanks,
Tyler

I've only ever done the FWS on the side of the engine, I do it myself, takes about 20 minutes. I've done 2 now in 72,000 KMS

Should be done every second oil change at minimum, some go every oil change. $45/filter may seem steep but cheap insurance when compared to replacing injectors. Alternatively I've installed a fass fuel system. You can get away with changing both filters once a yr depending on miles you put on. You'll need a 28mm socket to break the filter cap off if you are thinking of doing it yourself.

Better yet, i'll sell you my socket I bought for it as I've bypassed the stock filtration and show you how to do it. I charge beer.

Something is off. I did mine every second oil change, so every 20k. Who is charging you $400 to change it? I was paying around $45 like Tyler says and got them from Cummins. Easy to change unless they did a drastic change from the 2010 I had??? What brand of filter are they installing? Maybe for $400 Ill change it for you lol.

Change the filters when the computer tells you to, that's why it's there. There is algorithms it follows for load etc.

its an easy job to switch those two filters. If they are charging more than an hour, rip off.

There's 2 filters on the '13+ and they're expensive as fawk. To the OP check out Genos Garage for filters.

Wow that is crazy. After four new dodges I went Chevy this time and I guess it is good I did for the service side of it. The first four are free. I asked them what they normally charge. $100 for the oil change and if I want the fuel filter changed it is $150 total. For that much I'll have them do it after the four.

Yeah last time I did oil and both fuel filters it was $600. Mechanic only charged me a half hour labor to. Here's the funny thing... Computer says 0% fuel filter life left and 40% oil. I don't know how guys are getting multiple cycles of oil through their filters? It's only been 16k since the last one to.

Don't expect to keep your injectors or engine long if you are changing filters on these intervals. Clean oil and filters are cheap maintenance in comparison to $16,000 engine or $5000 injectors. I got 340,000k on my cummins and still running strong.

I do mine at 24k, which is what my monitor wants, but you need a new dealer. Both filters from dealer was $120, took 20 mins to do both.

You're comparing to older more inferior filter setups, the 13+ have two filters. I change mine every 24,000km as per computer and owners manual. I just did them this week, it takes like 30 mins, dealer wants $200 labor, ripoff. Cummins now stocks both of them, they are $90 each I believe. I did have them done at Derrick Dodge once, was only around $270 for both filters and labour, which isn't bad. But i'd never let them touch my truck again, time and time again they prove they are the most incompetent people around.

You have to remember most of the time the guys doing oil and filter changes are lube techs. Guys just starting out in the trade.
