It looks like some of us are swapping out the seats or radically changing them. I found that they are heavy, too low, log water and the crap vinyl cracked. so one night on a whim i just ripped the cover off and was forced too redo it, i cut the trunk off and trimmed the foam, i bought some 2" memory foam and marine neoprene (stretchy and waterproof-ish) and some fabric glue. Set up in the garage and got it done, the seat turned out awsome. probably less than half the weight and sooooo comfy specially thru the wooped out trails, nice to throw a knee on, its profile is smaller altho higher yet its not in the way anymore when tryin to thro a leg around for balance and best of all the neoprene stretches so its seamless. maybe $50 worth of materials and 2hrs time, not bad. Also the summit seat was all plastic not wood which is nice if your going to look for a new base.

I used the origanal foam but trimmed a bunch off the side and back then ran the memory foam over top from front to back. before covering i glued some stiffer thinner foam for shape to the sides and back, materials are from J. Ennis

....He already hates sledders enough

LOL, Mike has been hating us for over 2 decades, don't know about the tenure for skiing there and if the areas are accessible after the ski season, but you are right, its not good publicity to be hated.....

... I'm hoping if it is a little stiffer I won't have to add height? And I'll just put the stock seat cover back on. ....

If you can, I would recommend making it higher. It makes the transition from sitting to standing so much easier. The overall riding position is more comfortable and your knees are bent more at a 90 degree angle, instead of a squatting position. Seems like you have more leverage on the bars as well with the raised seating position.

Thanks for the insite Kore...I've been thinking about attacking my seat as well. My wife is extremely talented with a sewing maching (currently recovering boat seat and they look awesome).
I agree with Modman about raising the seat as well, just like you did. I find it tough to transition to standing on my 01 RMK.
Looks like I now have a project.

Just got back from McBride tonight, I agree I rode thinking of what to do and height would be better.I was thinking coming straight back from the top of the old seat bracket that way it should look ok in the tank-to-seat transition. After all I have all summer to get it right.

I get the pics going I'm going to start the seat on thurs or fri. I want to put it away soon but I think it shouldn't take that long to do the seat mod. (and that will give me all summer to find a new seat if I screw it up) Plus I have my new to me Crankshop pipes waiting to be put on! BRAAAAP They were only one day too late or I would have had them for the last trip this last weekend :(

This is a newbie question how easy is the seat to get off? Does it bolt from below (inside the tunnel)?

Yes, two bolts at the back usually on either side in the tunnel (beside the u-cooler). Slide it back once you get the bolts out, the front usually locks into a tab just behind the tank.

Are you going to raise the cylinders (thicker base gasket) at all or just adding the pipes? Are they the high altitude pipes?

I had the bolts break on me so i used a plywood anchor and came thru the underside of the tunnel with a 3/8 bolt and lock washer. Held good thru 30 barrel rolls!!
