Smile Which Tracks

Hi,
My name is Dave. I have not bought a bike yet, but am thinking about a Yam 55 w/ PS. I'm really interested in putting a set of trackes on it, and am hopeing to figure out the best way to go with that.

Re: Which Tracks

Keep in mind that this is just my opinon, dont waste your money on the 550, just buy the 700.
I have done alot of research on both and have rode both and i owned a 700
The 550 is the exact same machine and from what i have been told the motors are the same except the bore and the stroke are different. Unless you find a good deal on a 550, they are usually within 1000bucks and you will way happier with the 700 specially if you are putting tracks on it as they suck the power out, also I know a few guys and companies that have tried tracks, they work really good in the winter but not so hot in the summer. I cant count how many tracked machines i have seen broke down on the trail in the summer. just my 2 cents

Re: Which Tracks

IMO tracks don't suck the power, they give a lower gear reduction making it feel like a loss in power.

Get a 700, you will be glad you did.

Re: Which Tracks

You should definately go with the 700. As far as tracks go, I have personally be involved in 3 recoveries this past summer involving tracked quads in the west country. Two break downs and one stuck. In my opinion they are not worth a chit. I do know there are people on this site that have had really good luck with them but IMO if you spend the $3500 on a used sled your way ahead of the game.

Re: Which Tracks

Welcome to the site!!
On Quad Rallies with lots of muskeg and mud, I have also seen a few machines with tracks having to be fixed. Don't ask me if they are good or not, just the few I have seen always need repairs or need to be fixed half way through!!

Re: Which Tracks

WELCOME !

How about some first hand experience.

4 totally trouble free years on my Tatou snow only tracks. The guys that break down on tracks are the same guys that break down on wheels/tires.

Never stuck yet. Have tracks on 2 atvs, 455 & 550CCs. Both perform the same and stay with the bigger machines in every respect because of the lower gear ratios. I ride with a 1000CCCat & a couple of 800 Po's and we all go the same place. Had them on a 300CC Polaris hawkeye. Climbed like a monkey on a string but was too slow. Of all the tracked atv's I've ridden, my favourite is my Po. 400HO.

However, if speed is you're thing, tracks may not be for you. Top speed is cut usually 35-50% and fuel consumption goes up.

If you like travelling 20 mph or less and going ANYWHERE in 8 feet of snow. Give 'em a try.

MOst tracks perform & cost about the same - avoid Mattracks, to heavy.

Tried dry running, but didn't like it - too rought and takes an acre to turn around, Really rips up dry trails. IMO tracks are much better in snow.
