Re: Full synthetic or Half???

My reasoning on that is no synthetic,Diesels usually get a half of million miles with regular oil,Why would you waste your money.
My Two Cents

I have no shelter for my truck so it will be exposed to what winter has to offer as the wifes truck takes the garage and of course the sleds take the other half, also when i go out of town to work sometimes there are no electrical outlets available. My thoughts on the three choices are mixed, conventional oil sucks in cold weather and blend synthetic i know nothing about, i did hear that full synthetic does not hold the sludge as well as conventional so it does not drain out when changing oil (so i hear), which is why a blended mixture was made. And to answer Catmando, it is a diesel.

Re: Full synthetic or Half???

Full synthetic in everything. I've rebuilt too many engines that didn't have sythetic oil and only three that have. The three all have the same story; punctured cooling system and driven until the engine seals melted out and I drove all three onto the lift after refilling with oil.

Synthetic oil with diesels will help significantly with cold starts.

Post Re: Full synthetic or Half???

Before You Begin Switching Oils.... How Many Clicks On Your '08??? You Must Have At Least 15000kms On A Ford 6.6l Before You Consider Switch To Synthetics/blends, Because The Engine Has To Seat The Piston Rings To The Cylinders Properly(broken In, Is The Common Term). A Dodge Should Even Be More, Because The Cylinders Are So Hard. 15w40 Is Good Oil To Break An Engine In(one Of The Best Is Our Own Petro-canada Duron Oil), And Good Synthetic Is 5w40 Synthetic(again One Of The Best Is Petro-canada's Duron Synthetic). I Could Go On Forever On This Topic, But Like Katkantdoadoo Said Above; A Good Diesel With Consistant Good Quality Regular Diesel Oil Will Go 1/2 A Million Miles Before Any Internal Maintenance Is Required. You're Right In 5w40 Synthetic Will Allow Better Cold Starts, And I Am Switching My New Dodge Diesel To 5w40 Duron Synthetic On My Next Oil Change. I Could Send You Books/articles On This If You Really Want, But I Would Stick To Your Original Thought And Either Use Regular 15w40 Or Jump Into The Synthetic(no Need For Blends In A Diesel) If You Have Enough Mileage On Your Truck Already. Just My 30 Years Experience And 2cents Worth......

Re: Full synthetic or Half???

I run AMSOIL in everything. I change my oil once a year depending on how dirty it is but usally its 9 to 12 mounths so in reality its cheaper for me anyways. As far as reg vs Synthetic, ever had a 1950's to 1980's pick-up with a farmer 4sp with a gear drive t-case in -25C. Hard to shift for the first 10-15 miles its so stiff, switch to Synthetic and you will notice the differance. I used to run JD hydro/Synthetic in my 4sd and tcase in my 72chev. Now I use amsoil in everything due to I get it pretty cheap.

Hey Overkill,
where do you get amsoil at a good price? I only run it in my sled and dirt bike as it is way too expensive to run in my truck

My brother "J-Man" owns a oil service company in Red Deer which he runs Amsoil in everything, he buys it by the barrel. Last year we bought a barrel of DOMINATOR 2 stroke oil, it worked out to about $8/ liter.
