Ford F350 diesel issues

My 2008 F350 6.4 diesel is having some issues this week. On sunday I started but it was surging while idleing. Idled at about 680 for 1 second then almost quit then back up to idle then almost quit ab
and it kept repeating itself. So I turned it off then restarted it it was fine. Then today went to work with no issues and then I had an appoitment at 2:30. So I started the truck as I always do it ran like crap. Blue grey smoke poured out of the muffler. I held the gas petal down trying to clean whatever is causing this. It wouldn't idle more than 2000, by now I can't even see behind me I started moving down a service road with no traffic. With my petal depressed ad far as it would go I could get more than 30 km/hr. With smoke billowing heavy from the engine that almost quit several times. The turbos register more than 10 psi boost. So now it stopped smoking. But it's like I'm driving a chevette. I have virtually no power, my engine light is on. I'm lucky it will make 60 km/hr with the petal to the floor. So I'm not sure what's wrong but this has no power, called the dealer. There quite booked. So I hope it will clear it self up. This has done this before to, I'm still waiting for ford to give me a call. I requested a buy back but they have failed to call me back in 5 months now. Or at least fix it right and give me a free rental truck while it sits at the dealer for anouther 2 weeks. Any one have this issue.

Re: Ford F350 diesel issues

When is the last time the filters were done. Fuel filter is every 20K, air filter as needed etc. etc. Oh and one more thing .... did you chip it?

Re: Ford F350 diesel issues

Find somebody with a code reader to plug in and check it out for you, I have an SCT but live in Calgary or I could do it for you. There should be members up there that have one of these or another like it. Sometimes local auto supply shops will have readers as well, once you find the codes just Google them to find out what they mean. How many miles do you have on it? Is it stock or modified?

You could check your airfilter to make sure it isn't iced off, make sure the map sensor is in and reset and make sure your exhaust sensors haven't been disonnected, theres one of those before and after your DPF that can be tore off. I was in Ft. Nelson a few years back and picked up some bad fuel, I put in some conditioner and was good to go after running about 1/4 tank through. Let us know how you make out.

Re: Ford F350 diesel issues

This truck is not chipped. Air filter good. Fuel filters changed. Full tank. Just changed oil. This is a 2008. Egr sensors been changed 2 times. I only fuel up at busy stations. It will get enough power to go into 4th gear. 80km top speed when holding petal to floor and 2250 rpm no more

Re: Ford F350 diesel issues

Sounds like you have all the first check items taken care of, a code reader will be your next step. I have had tons of problems with my 08, come to think of it the last time it went to the shop was for a cracked EGR valve, the truck ran like crap but not as bad as what you described and they replaced it under warranty that afternoon. Look for code P1408.

Shoulda, coulda, woulda.................. You know you shouldn't have bought the first year of any vehicle....... Shoulda bought a dodge. I won't say anything further. Get it in and the boys can scan it and see if any codes....... Sounds like the dpf is plugged again!

We can put on an exhaust with dpf delete and then put an edge evolution and bypass the dpfe altogether!

I had 2 Dmax's, got 77k outta the first one before the motor blew and 127k outta the second one before the electrical went and GM couldn't find the problem. I do prefer the GM's for day to day driving hands down, but the Ford will outpull and outwork the GM's hands down everyday. My next truck may very well be a Dodge as I like to try everything out there. Dodge just needs to prove the reliability of the truck itself, there is no doubt the Cummins is a hell of a motor. I have tuned every diesel I have ever owned to the max that programming, intake and exhaust will take me including stacking chips etc. even my Jeep Diesel has been tuned. All trucks have there good and bad points and their fans and foes.

Not sure what's going on Now. Lost my turbo now and I'm stuck trying to get back to Edmonton from Beaumont. Can't do more than 15 km/h.

Re: Ford F350 diesel issues

It mabie some bad diesel. Made it back. Smoked for a way. Will have to put a conditioner in when I get home. Filled up at the new superstore. I'll pull my filters and check them.

Re: Ford F350 diesel issues

BF I called ford a while back to try for the lemon buy back. They pulled my history and I havn't heard back. I tried calling again today. Now I will try tommorow with another complaint. Firstly I need to scan this and get the codes and see what's up.
