Moving from Alberta to BC??????

Has anyone out there made the move from Alberta to BC?

Was it worth giving up that great job?

Was it worth leaving friends/family?

Did the amazing geography and riding destinations increase your riding days?

I would like to bring my sled, street bike and quad with me; was insurance a huge difference?

How much did the cost of living increase?

Hope to someday be living in the province I always run away to on vacation!

Thanks for all input.

Re: Moving from Alberta to BC??????

how much salary difference are we talking? Are you the type of person who takes the time to use the stuff around home? how many times you go to the mountains a year? got family here or there?

I'd love to move there, but a) I'd be lucky to find a job that paid half of what I make here, and b) my wife's family is here so it's a no go.

Re: Moving from Alberta to BC??????

Wage is something I know I will have to sacrifice for the lifestyle. Family is all in Alberta. I average 6 trips a year taking approximately 10-12 hours of driving. I would only hope my riding time would increase, I do ride at home but sometimes the climate don't cooperate and the riding at home just aint as good as it is in bc.

Re: Moving from Alberta to BC??????

When I moved to Golden from AB, it was absolutely all about the sleddin'. I could get up in the morning or even the night before if it was snowing.........make a cpl calls & head out to the hills. If it was socked right in or crappy out, you don't have to ride everyday. If you make a trip out to the hills, you want to make the best of it while you're there. I have had great rides out there just on an afternoon ride. Now I've moved back to AB for work & I'm missing the mountains big time. Nice being able to sleep in your own bed every night after riding as well

Re: Moving from Alberta to BC??????

What do you do for work? There are a couple of areas with great scenery and riding that have some good paying jobs as well...

I think your best bet for that is the East Kootenays - 5 Coal mines with good wages and amazing scenery from Cranbrook through to Elkford

Re: Moving from Alberta to BC??????

I moved from Alberta to BC.
It is a different lifestyle for sure. I live in the Kootenays, life is a bit slower here. If nature and all that it has to offer is of value to you then the move will be well worth it. I've seen peeps move here from Calgary/Edmonton/Vancouver who move in less than a year because.. "there's nothing to do"... "there's no starbucks"...... "there's no shopping".... for us we are thankful to quad, dirt bike, fish, Sled, grow awesome produce and feel at peace surrounded by some of the most amazing landscape ever created.

Re: Moving from Alberta to BC??????

As of yesterday I now own 25 acres and a log house up near Sun Peaks ski area in Kamloops. House in Ed is up for sale and as soon as it sells we're gone.

After a few years of driving 5 hours friday night, sledding saturday / sunday and then driving 5 hours back sunday night(if the weather is good) we finally decided enough is enough. Not that that was our only reason, just a good one.

We picked Kamloops after much deliberating. We love Golden or Invermere but just not enough going on for work. Kamloops is central, close to my parents, we can sled right from our driveway, I can highmark my front yard, great mountain biking. Blue River or Sicamous are accessable for a day trip. Town is a 25 minute comute (like living in St Albert and working in ED) I can go on and on.

It came down to this. . . moving there now is a lifestyle move not a career move. I don't care if I have to pick up dog shit for a living I just needed to be back in the mountains.

If anyone knows a company in kamloops looking for a 20 yr experienced production welding shop manager let me know.

Cheers

Michelle

Re: Moving from Alberta to BC??????

Better climate, better way of life, it cost more but worth every cent! I grew up in B.C. moved to AB working on the rigs and missed the mountains. Now with my job I can live here in B.C. again. It's all about the mountains.
