Synthetic winch cable

I installed a synthetic winch cable last night and instructions said that I had to buy a new roller fairlead. I looked at mine and it had no visible burs or rough spots . How critical is the surface finish of the rollers ? or is this a ploy to get people to buy new fairleads ?

Thanks

Re: Synthetic winch cable

It must be pretty smooth or it will start to pick apart the rope. I pulled mine apart and sanded it smooth and greased it up at the same time.

Re: Synthetic winch cable

If the rope is that sensitive to nicks & burrs on the fairlead, how do you trust it to pull through bush, ground, rocks & mud?

Warn did supply a mesh sheath about 4 ft long that is suppose to protect the hook end of the rope . The instructions said not to hook the synthetic rope onto itself . I guess you have to use a nylon strap to go around a tree or bumper of the other quad etc. Time will tell how sensitive the rope is.

Re: Synthetic winch cable

I bought 3 lengths of 50" complete with hause fairleads, shipped to my door for $80 each. I put it on my wife's Ranger this summer, and used the winch at least a dozen times in the trees and such. No problems yet. It comes with a 4 foot chafe gaurd that you slide up and down the line if you have to go over rocks or trees. I haven't gotten around to putting it on my Outty yet. It is sure a lot nicer to work with than steel cable, no whickers, kinks, or back-wraps on the drum.

Re: Synthetic winch cable

I run it and no problems with useing old faileads. After you wash your quad or go muding pull out all the rope and let it dry, as i heard it will rott if you let it sit.
